Industrial Computed Tomography information

What is industrial computed tomography?

Industrial computed tomography (CT) is a non-destructive imaging technique used to inspect the internal structure of objects and materials in industries such as manufacturing, aerospace, and automotive. It uses X-rays to create cross-sectional images (slices) of an object, which can be combined to form a detailed 3D representation. This allows for precise measurement, defect detection, and quality control without damaging the item. Industrial CT is particularly valuable for analyzing complex assemblies and ensuring product integrity.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in industrial computed tomography, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Industrial Computed Tomography (CT) often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex scan data, managing large datasets, and ensuring accurate calibration of equipment. Keeping up with rapid advancements in CT technology and software can also be demanding. These challenges can be addressed by participating in ongoing training, collaborating closely with engineers and quality assurance teams, and staying updated on the latest industry standards and software tools. Regular maintenance and calibration protocols further help minimize technical issues and improve scan reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an industrial computed tomography (CT) technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Industrial Computed Tomography Technician, you need a solid background in engineering or physics, strong analytical skills, and relevant technical training or certification in industrial radiography or nondestructive testing (NDT). Proficiency in operating CT scanning systems, image processing software, and data analysis platforms is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and clear communication are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate inspections, maintaining safety standards, and delivering reliable results in quality assurance and research settings.

What is the difference between Industrial Computed Tomography vs NDT Technician?

AspectIndustrial Computed TomographyNDT Technician
CredentialsTypically requires certifications in industrial CT and radiographyRequires NDT certifications like ASNT Level II or III
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, manufacturing plants, and inspection facilitiesField sites, manufacturing, and inspection labs
Industry UsageUsed for internal defect detection, complex part analysisUsed for various non-destructive testing methods including radiography and ultrasonic testing

While both roles involve non-destructive testing, Industrial Computed Tomography specialists focus on 3D internal imaging using CT technology, whereas NDT Technicians perform a variety of testing methods to detect flaws, often in the field. Both require specialized certifications and are vital in quality assurance across industries.

Job description

Job Description

Would you like to be the technical owner of LEGO Manufacturing Virginia's

Industrial Computed Tomography (CT) inspection system and the site's designated Radiation Safety Officer (RSO)?

This role is responsible for developing, programming, validating, and optimizing CT inspection methods to evaluate product quality, dimensional accuracy, and internal product characteristics while ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and company radiation safety requirements. Working in partnership with the Metrology & Calibration Engineer, the Industrial CT Engineer provides specialized engineering expertise to support the site's metrology and calibration program through advanced dimensional analysis, measurement system validation, equipment qualification, and technical problem solving. As the site's subject matter expert for Industrial CT technology and radiation safety, this position collaborates with Quality, Manufacturing, Engineering, Production, Tooling, Maintenance, and Product Development to support new product introductions, resolve complex manufacturing challenges, enhance measurement capability, and drive continuous improvement across manufacturing operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the site technical owner and subject matter expert for Industrial Computed Tomography (CT) systems, responsible for developing, programming, validating, and continuously optimizing CT inspection programs, automated inspection routines, and scanning methodologies.

  • Perform advanced CT inspections and analyses, including dimensional measurement, internal defect detection, porosity evaluation, wall thickness analysis, assembly verification, and failure investigations to support product quality and manufacturing performance.

  • Develop standardized CT inspection methods, reporting templates, and best practices by interpreting CAD models, engineering drawings, and GD&T requirements to ensure accurate, repeatable, and efficient inspection processes.

  • Administer and maintain the site's Radiation Protection Program, ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, and company radiation safety regulations governing Industrial CT operations.

  • Manage all radiation safety documentation, including registrations, permits, regulatory records, procedures, work instructions, emergency response plans, personnel dosimetry, and other required compliance documentation.

  • Coordinate radiation safety activities, including equipment inspections, radiation surveys, preventive maintenance, employee training, qualification requirements, and implementation of ALARA principles to ensure the safe operation of Industrial CT equipment.

  • Serve as the primary site liaison for regulatory agencies by supporting inspections, audits, incident investigations, corrective actions, and ongoing regulatory compliance initiatives.

  • Partner with the Metrology & Calibration Engineer to support the site's metrology and calibration program through equipment qualification, calibration activities, advanced dimensional analysis, and implementation of new measurement technologies.
