SUMMARY
The QC/QA Lab Tech is responsible for assisting the QC/QA Lab Manager in designing, organizing and implementing a quality product. This process includes but may not be limited to managing all activities related to the safe production of hot mix asphalt by maintaining a safe working environment and safe working practices in all plant operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Comply with all safety policies, procedures and established safe practices. Report all unsafe conditions and actions to the QC/QA Lab Manager and/or QC/QA Manager.
    • Work with the Production Team to meet customer needs and identify and develop new applications for existing products and developing new products.
    • Perform sampling, processing and testing materials used in the production of Hot Mix Asphalt in accordance with AASHTO, ASTM, INDOT, KYTC, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and FAA.
    • Communicate with QC/QA Manager, Plant Operators, Field Superintendents, State Hwy. officials and Customer Engineering Representatives, as necessary, in a professional manner.
    • Prepare and maintain Daily Progress Reports, QC Charts and testing records.
    • Evaluate test results and communicate with QC/QA Lab Manager to assist with maintaining compliance with specifications, including mixture blend changes.
    • Perform maintenance and calibration of lab testing equipment and document findings.
    • Perform HMA mix designs.
    • Select products for tests at specified states in production process, and test products for a variety of qualities.
    • Maintain AMRL Accreditation for Mix Design Lab.
    • Always put Safety first.
    • Assist the QC/QA Lab Manager in designing, organizing and implementing a quality control operation.
    • Perform Quality Control Testing of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and associated materials as assigned.
    • Assist in the review of contract documents and assist the QC/QA Lab Manager in preparing the construction schedule.
    • Identify problems, gather and analyze information and make appropriate recommendations.
    • Maintain a clean and orderly work area and meet other housekeeping needs as required.
    • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, including:
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal structure while exercising vast judgment
  • Strong ability to multitask, prioritize, and work well under pressure to meet established deadlines
  • Ability to identify and appropriately mitigate risk associated with the pre-construction process
  • Effective, professional oral and written communication skills.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • A Minimum High School Diploma; A Degree preferred in Construction Management, Civil Engineering or related field
  • A minimum of 1-3 years of related QC/QA Lab experience, preferred
  • Must have the INDOT HMA Technician Certification completed within 1 year of employment
  • Must have the KYTC HMA Plant technician Certification completed within 1 year of employment
  • Must have the KYTC Mix Design Technician Certification completed within 1 year of employment
  • Must be willing to attend and participate in Asphalt Pavement Association meetings thru INDOT and KYTC

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Willing and able to achieve necessary certification in all required states.
