What is an independent engineer?

An Independent Engineer is a professional who provides impartial technical review and advice on engineering projects, often for lenders, investors, or regulatory bodies. Their role is to assess project feasibility, ensure compliance with standards, and monitor progress and performance without bias. Independent Engineers help to identify risks, verify project documentation, and confirm that contractual and technical requirements are being met. They are commonly involved in large infrastructure, energy, and construction projects, offering expertise throughout the project lifecycle.

What are some common challenges faced by independent engineers when working with multiple clients simultaneously?

Independent Engineers often juggle several projects at once, which can present challenges in managing timelines, communication, and differing client expectations. Prioritizing tasks effectively and maintaining clear, consistent communication with each client is essential to avoid misunderstandings and ensure project milestones are met. Additionally, adapting to various technical requirements and organizational cultures for each client requires flexibility and strong problem-solving skills. Building a reliable workflow and utilizing project management tools can help streamline processes and improve client satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Engineer, you need a solid engineering background, relevant degree or licensure (such as Professional Engineer status), and expertise in project evaluation and technical due diligence. Familiarity with project management software, CAD systems, and industry-specific standards or certifications like LEED is often required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving skills are crucial for building trust and delivering unbiased assessments. These competencies ensure accurate project evaluations, regulatory compliance, and successful client outcomes.

What is the difference between Independent Engineer vs Project Engineer?

AspectIndependent EngineerProject Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, relevant certifications, sometimes licensingEngineering degree, project management certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentConsulting, independent review, site inspectionsOn-site project management, coordination with teams
Employer & IndustryConsulting firms, developers, EPC contractorsConstruction companies, engineering firms, project owners

While both roles require engineering expertise, an Independent Engineer primarily provides independent assessments, reviews, and oversight, often working as a consultant. A Project Engineer manages daily project activities, coordinating teams and ensuring project milestones are met. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or hiring the appropriate professional for your project needs.

Job description

Role: Manager, Development Operations
Location: Minneapolis, MN
Apply: www.spearmintenergy.com / joinus@spearmintenergy.com
Who We Are
Spearmint Energy is a leading company focused on developing, owning, operating, and optimizing battery energy storage systems ("BESS") to reduce grid volatility and increase system resiliency. Spearmint currently operates 350 MW / 700 MWh in ERCOT and has projects under development throughout the United States. Headquartered in Florida, with an additional office in Minnesota, the Company employs over 60 professionals and is guided by strong values rooted in people, partnerships, and the planet.

What You Will Do
Spearmint Energy is seeking a Manager, Development Operations, to serve as a critical operational resource at the intersection of our IPP development business and our Project Finance function. This role is designed for someone who understands how utility-scale energy projects get built and financed-and who thrives on bringing order, discipline, and execution rigor to complex, multi-stakeholder processes.
You will own the interface between Spearmint's development team and our Project Finance group, taking primary responsibility for managing the processes and deliverables that move projects from development through financing close. During active financing periods, you will manage virtual data rooms, drive the Independent Engineer report process from coordination through completion, facilitate construction loan requisitions, and coordinate the administrative regulatory filings required in connection with project financing transactions. When not in active financing mode, you will turn your attention to the operational infrastructure of our development business: maintaining project data systems, producing portfolio-wide reporting, and supporting the full range of IPP activities spanning development, engineering, procurement, construction, and interconnection.
This is a high-visibility, high-ownership role on a lean and fast-moving team. You will work directly alongside senior leadership and interface regularly with lenders, independent engineers, legal counsel, and regulatory bodies. The right candidate will bring energy development fluency, strong organizational instincts, and a track record of managing deadline-driven, document-intensive processes with precision.
Core Responsibilities:
Project Finance Interface
  • Own and manage virtual data rooms for active project financing transactions, including document organization, index maintenance, access control, and ongoing upkeep through financing close.
  • Lead the Independent Engineer (IE) report process-coordinating across development, engineering, procurement, EPC, and legal teams to identify, compile, review, and upload material project documents; driving toward a complete, accurate, and financeable IE report on transaction timelines.
  • Facilitate monthly construction loan requisition processes, coordinating between the development team, EPC contractors, and accounting to support timely and complete draw package submissions.
  • Serve as the primary IPP-side point of contact for financing diligence and closing processes, managing document and information requests from lenders, tax equity investors, and their respective counsel.

Regulatory Filings (Financing-Adjacent)
  • Coordinate the preparation and timely submission of administrative regulatory filings required in connection with project financing, including filings with applicable state public utility commissions, ISO/RTOs, FERC, and other regulatory bodies as required.
  • Own the filing calendar and submission process, working in close coordination with legal counsel, the interconnection team, and external consultants who provide substantive regulatory expertise.
  • Maintain complete and organized records of all regulatory submissions, agency correspondence, and responses in support of financing diligence and ongoing compliance requirements.

Development Operations & Systems
  • Maintain and improve Spearmint's key project data databases and internal reporting infrastructure, including tools within the SpearCore / Microsoft Fabric ecosystem.
  • Produce regular, accurate portfolio-wide reporting on project status across development, engineering, procurement, construction, and interconnection workstreams.
  • Support process documentation, standardization, and improvement across IPP functions.
  • Provide general operational facilitation across the development team, ensuring the right information gets to the right people at the right time.

Who You Are
  • 2-4 years of experience at a renewable energy developer, independent power producer, energy consultancy, or similar organization, with meaningful exposure to the utility-scale project development lifecycle.
  • Working familiarity with project financing processes and documentation-data rooms, diligence, IE reports, or construction loan administration-gained through direct experience or close proximity to transactions.
  • General awareness of ISO/RTO frameworks, interconnection processes, and the types of regulatory filings associated with project financing and commercial operations; depth of expertise is less important than breadth of exposure and a demonstrated ability to learn quickly.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and deadline-driven, with a track record of managing complex, document-intensive processes across multiple simultaneous workstreams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable interfacing with lenders, independent engineers, legal counsel, and regulatory bodies in a professional capacity.
  • Proficient with Microsoft 365 tools (Excel, SharePoint, Teams); familiarity with data platforms, project tracking systems, or document management tools is a plus.
  • Self-directed and adaptable-able to shift between financing sprint mode and steady-state operational work without losing momentum or attention to detail.

Must have work authorization to work in the United States.
