Job description

Position summary
The Structural Steel Shop Plans Checker reviews shop drawings and related documents for completeness, accuracy, and constructability before release to the shop. This role helps prevent errors, rework, and field issues by verifying that drawings align with contract documents, project requirements, and company standards.

Key responsibilities
  • Review structural steel shop drawings for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with:
    • Contract documents (plans/specs/addenda)
    • AISC/industry standards as applicable
    • Project-specific requirements and company drafting/checking standards
  • Verify member sizes, material grades, connection details, dimensions, elevations, orientations, and callouts.
  • Check bolt/weld symbols, weld sizes, hole sizes, edge distances, cope dimensions, camber, and fit-up requirements.
  • Confirm consistency between:
    • Erection drawings, detail drawings, and bill of material (BOM)
    • Material lists, piece marks, and nesting/cut lists (when applicable)
    • RFI responses, design revisions, and approved change orders
  • Review and mark up drawings clearly; communicate required corrections to detailers/drafters.
  • Track revisions and ensure drawing updates are incorporated correctly (including clouding/revision notes).
  • Coordinate with project management, estimating, and fabrication leadership on questions, assumptions, and schedule needs.
  • Support submittal package preparation and internal release processes.
  • Help maintain drawing/checking standards, checklists, and continuous improvement of quality systems.
Required qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in structural steel detailing, checking, fabrication, or related construction engineering.
  • Strong understanding of structural steel fabrication and erection practices (piece marks, BOMs, fit-up, tolerances).
  • Ability to read and interpret structural design drawings and specifications.
  • Working knowledge of common connection types and steel terminology.
  • High attention to detail and ability to work through complex drawings methodically.
  • Proficiency with PDF markup tools and basic computer skills.
Preferred qualifications
  • Experience checking shop drawings produced in Tekla Structures, SDS/2, or similar.
  • Familiarity with AISC Code of Standard Practice and AWS welding symbols.
  • Experience reviewing erection sequences, shipping/handling constraints, and field fit considerations.
  • Prior experience in a fabrication shop environment.
