What is an Independent Contractor Solar Installer job?

An Independent Contractor Solar Installer is a self-employed professional who installs solar panels for residential or commercial projects. They typically work with solar companies or directly with clients on a contract basis, handling panel placement, wiring, and system integration. Unlike full-time employees, independent contractors manage their own schedules, tools, and business expenses. This role requires knowledge of electrical systems, roofing, and safety regulations. Licensing and certification may be required depending on state laws.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Independent Contractor Solar Installer position, and why are they important?

To excel as an Independent Contractor Solar Installer, you need practical experience in electrical systems, roofing, and construction, often supported by relevant trade certifications or on-the-job training. Familiarity with solar panel mounting hardware, wiring techniques, and compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) is essential, and many installers also obtain safety certifications like OSHA 10. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and excellent customer service skills help differentiate top performers in the field. These competencies are crucial for ensuring high-quality installations, maintaining safety standards, and building a positive reputation with clients and contractors.

What kind of work schedule and job structure can I expect as an Independent Contractor Solar Installer?

As an Independent Contractor Solar Installer, your work schedule is typically project-based and may vary depending on client needs, weather conditions, and installation timelines. Most contractors enjoy flexibility in setting their hours but should be prepared for occasional long days, especially during peak seasons or when deadlines approach. You may work solo on smaller jobs or as part of a subcontracted team on larger projects, coordinating closely with general contractors and electricians. Travel to different job sites is common, and a strong focus on meeting safety and quality standards is expected throughout each assignment.

Job description

Company Description

Be part of a team of inspectors, engineers, and technicians conducting structural condition assessments to support the emerging solar revolution
This is a new engineering firm being formed from a long history.
Your contribution would be enormous and highly visible.

Job Description

Central New York roof-top solar panel installation and engineering company is seeking a Residential Framing Inspector and Repair Technician for the WNY region (Niagara Falls - Buffalo - Jamestown)
We need someone who can perform structural inspections of existing wood framed residential roofs and their supporting structures (structural, not the roofing itself)
And create sketches and/or drawings of the existing structure.
And be able to add simple wood bracing (collar ties, knee walls, strongbacks, etc.) when needed.
Your inspection report goes to our Engineering Department and we decide if the existing roof can support the additional weight of the proposed solar panels.
If our engineers decide to reinforce the existing roof structure (only structural repairs not the roofing) then you would also need to provide an estimate of the repairs.
We prefer someone who can actually do the repairs or manage the repair project by others (but not required)

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/EXPERIENCE NEEDED:
1) BLUEPRINT READING/MEASUREMENT, DRAFTING, AND/OR DRAWING SKILLS EXPERIENCE
You will need to take measurements, photos, and create sketches or drawings of the existing structure as-built:
You must be able to take accurate measurements and create multi-view sketches including section views and plan views to accurately and completely describe the existing structure.
These can be hand sketches but must be legible and a quick read. No narrative descriptions, no checklists, or wordy descriptions will be acceptable - must be an acceptable engineering or architectural drawing with notes.
Sometimes you can find or get "as built" drawings from the original architect or engineer. Sometimes you can get from the town or village records. Those are acceptable.
2) LICENSED OR CERTIFIED HOME INSPECTOR
You must be able to recognize structural flaws (and we also provide some specialized training for this).
You need to be a NYS-DOS licensed Home Inspector or able to get within 6 months.
However we will consider someone registered or otherwise certified by a recognized organization such as InterNACHI, NAHI, or ASHI, etc.
3) BASIC SKILLS
framing, construction, or carpentry experience and tools
reliable transportation
basic computer and internet experience
able to safely climb ladders and crawl into tight spaces
basic building code experience (and we also provide training for this)
