What is an independent contractor SLP teletherapist?

An Independent Contractor SLP Teletherapist is a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) who provides speech therapy services remotely, using telecommunication technology such as video conferencing. Unlike traditional employees, independent contractors work on a contract basis, often for multiple clients or companies, and manage their own schedules, taxes, and business expenses. Teletherapy allows SLPs to deliver assessments, interventions, and consultations to clients who may be in different geographic locations, offering flexibility and accessibility. This role typically requires reliable internet, appropriate licensure, and strong digital communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor SLP teletherapist?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor SLP Teletherapist, you need a master’s degree in speech-language pathology, state licensure, and ASHA certification (CCC-SLP). Familiarity with teletherapy platforms, secure video conferencing tools, and electronic documentation systems is crucial. Exceptional communication, self-motivation, and adaptability help build rapport with clients remotely and manage a flexible caseload. These skills and qualifications ensure effective remote service delivery, compliance with regulations, and positive client outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced by independent contractor SLPs in teletherapy and how can they be addressed?

Independent Contractor SLPs working in teletherapy often encounter challenges such as establishing rapport with clients remotely, managing technology issues, and coordinating schedules across time zones. To address these, it's important to use engaging digital materials, maintain open communication with clients and caregivers, and ensure reliable internet and backup plans for sessions. Additionally, being proactive in scheduling and flexible in adapting therapy techniques for virtual delivery helps build successful client relationships and effective outcomes.

Overview/Impact:

Are you a skilled and compassionate Speech-Language Pathologist eager to help students in Queens unlock their communication potential? Knowledge Road is seeking a full-time Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) to join our team and deliver critical support to students in NYC Department of Education (DOE) schools. With a major shortage throughout the city of related service providers, your skills are in high demand to help students in overcoming communication barriers and achieving academic success. This is an opportunity to make a significant impact, working with students with diverse communication needs in school-based environments.

As an SLP with Knowledge Road, you will enjoy the autonomy to deliver individualized therapy using evidence-based practices, partnering with school teams and families to support student communication development.

Responsibilities

As a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) with Knowledge Road, you will:

  • Provide direct, high-quality speech and language therapy services to students in both individual and group settings, according to their Individualized Education Service Programs/Individualized Education Programs (IESP/IEP).

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to diagnose and evaluate speech, language, voice, and fluency disorders.

  • Develop and implement innovative and effective treatment plans customized to the unique needs of each student.

  • Collaborate with parents, teachers, and other school professionals to establish a holistic and supportive learning environment.

  • Maintain thorough and timely documentation of all services, progress, and outcomes in accordance with DOE and Knowledge Road standards.

  • Participate actively in IESP/IEP meetings, offering expert insights and recommendations to advance student progress.

    Qualifications:

  • Current valid NYS license in Speech-Language Pathology.

  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a school-based setting.

  • Proficiency with electronic documentation and teletherapy platforms.

  • NYC DOE fingerprinting and vendor status required or willingness to complete prior to start.

Schedule & Location

This is a full-time, school-day role in Queens following a schedule that aligns with the NYC DOE calendar. You will deliver services on-site at schools in the Queens area, with assignments determined by student needs. Hours per week are based on IESP/IEP requirements; caseload may differ by assignment. Typically ~20-30 hours/week based on student assignments.

Compensation

This 1099 contractor role provides tiered hourly rates depending on group size, from $80-$185/hr.
Why Join Knowledge Road?

At Knowledge Road, you will benefit from:

  • 1099 contractor role with fast, reliable payments

  • Efficient administrative and documentation workflows

  • Supportive team offering DOE compliance and scheduling support

  • Collaborative network of NYC school-based professionals

Application Requirements

Please submit your resume and relevant NYS license/certification. Include (or note readiness to obtain) NYC DOE fingerprinting and vendor status. Proof of your ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence.
