What is an independent contractor project management?

An Independent Contractor Project Management job involves overseeing projects on a contractual basis rather than as a full-time employee. Independent contractors manage project scope, timelines, budgets, and team coordination while working with multiple clients or organizations. They bring expertise in planning, execution, and risk management to ensure successful project completion. This role offers flexibility but requires strong self-management and communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in independent contractor project management?

To excel as an Independent Contractor in Project Management, you need a solid understanding of project planning, budgeting, and risk management, typically combined with proven project management experience and, often, a PMP or similar certification. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Project, Asana, Trello, or other project management platforms is common in the field. Strong communication, adaptability, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills given the autonomous and client-facing nature of the work. These competencies ensure effective project delivery, client satisfaction, and the ability to successfully manage multiple projects independently.

What are some typical challenges faced by independent contractor project managers and how can they be addressed?

Independent contractor project managers often navigate the challenges of managing multiple client expectations, tight deadlines, and shifting project scopes without the consistent support of an in-house team. Success relies on setting clear contracts, establishing proactive communication channels, and diligently tracking project progress with the right tools. Building a strong professional network and having reliable subcontractors or collaborators can help address gaps in expertise or resources. Staying organized and regularly reassessing project priorities are important strategies for meeting client goals and ensuring project success.

Project Manager – SW Florida

General Contractor · On-site · Full-time

Base Compensation: $90k-$130k annually - depending on experience

Our client is a nationally recognized general contractor with over six decades of project delivery experience and an international footprint. They are seeking a Project Manager to join a high-profile project in the SW Florida region. This individual will serve as the on-site day-to-day management lead, working directly under a seasoned Project Executive and alongside senior project management staff.

What you\'ll be doing
  • Serve as the primary on-site management resource for a complex, multi-scope project
  • Manage concurrent scopes of work (e.g., structural, MEP, electrical) with strong organizational and financial oversight
  • Maintain high-level client and stakeholder relationships while managing day-to-day execution
  • Develop and implement project controls, procedures, and risk mitigation strategies
  • Monitor and manage the change order process to ensure accurate financial forecasting
  • Leverage technology tools — scheduling software, iPad, and digital platforms — to drive project performance
Required qualifications
  • Bachelor\'s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related technical discipline
  • 3+ years of recent, continuous experience managing industrial or commercial projects for a General Contractor
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project controls, financial forecasting, and contract compliance
  • Comfortable managing multiple scopes of work simultaneously across a project
  • Tech-savvy — proficient with scheduling software and field technology tools
Preferred qualifications
  • 5+ years of PM experience with a background in healthcare construction (hospitals, surgical centers, standalone ER/urgent care) or FDA-regulated/biotech/pharma manufacturing facilities
  • Experience with clean room or sterile environment construction
  • Track record managing $20M+ in project value, either on a single project or across multiple simultaneous projects
  • Prior experience writing subcontractor scopes, managing deliverables, and influencing bid strategy
  • Background as a Project Engineer on ground-up construction projects
About the opportunity

You\'ll be joining a project led by a deeply experienced executive known for mentoring talent and building strong teams. This is a great long-term opportunity for a PM who brings excellent fundamentals, a collaborative approach, and the drive to grow within a project organization that values both technical skill and relationship management.

Candidates with strong PM fundamentals and a willingness to grow are encouraged to apply
