The Opportunity
As a Federal Civil Engineer, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Focus on the delivery of civil site development projects and will assist in the design, construction, and project management of a wide variety of projects involving grading design, stormwater design, erosion control design culvert design, pavement design, etc.
  • Contribute to the planning and design of complex site development projects
  • Professional will have hands-on involvement in permitting process

Our primary areas of focus include: Architecture/Engineering (A/E) and Classified Design Services, Construction Designer of Record (DOR) Services, Environmental Services, and Integrated (multi subcontract) Services.
Typical client base includes Department of Defense (DOD), United States Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) and many private companies in the Federal arena where Black & Veatch frequently teams for project execution in joint venture (JV) roles or utilizes a sub/prime contracting arrangement.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support civil site development design including grading, drainage, stormwater systems, utilities, erosion control, and pavement layouts.
  • Assist with preparation of plans, specifications, reports, and permitting documentation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in project planning, scheduling, and coordination with federal clients and contractors.
  • Engage in field visits and on-site reviews as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and project partners in a professional, solutions-oriented manner.

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related discipline
  • Licensed PE or ability and interest to obtain PE and/or be in active pursuit of registration
  • Understanding of civil site development (i.e., Site Plans, Permitting, Grading, Storm Water Management, Storm Water Design)
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk Civil 3D for design and drafting.
  • Exposure to transportation-related civil design.
  • Comfort in client-facing roles, including presenting technical information.
  • Ability to work across teams and contribute to multi-disciplinary project delivery.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to learn, adapt, and take on new engineering challenges.
  • Ability to support multiple projects and manage deadlines in a collaborative environment.

Assigned to projects for U.S. Government Agency/Department clients. Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen. Must be able to obtain security clearance.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing or equivalent experience in Engineering work
  • Minimum of 5 years related work experience
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
  • Holds an active engineering registration or licensure to support engineer of record (EOR) requirements for BV projects in applicable countries, and supports where necessary.
