What is a packaging job?

Packaging jobs involve preparing products for shipment, storage, or sale by placing them in appropriate containers, boxes, or wrapping materials. Workers in packaging may also inspect products for quality, label packages, and ensure that all items are securely packed to prevent damage during transportation. These roles are essential in manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution industries, as they help ensure products reach customers in good condition. Packaging jobs can range from manual labor positions to roles operating automated machinery, and may require attention to detail and adherence to safety standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in packaging, and why are they important?

To thrive in Packaging, you need attention to detail, basic math skills, and familiarity with safety and quality standards, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Experience with packaging machinery, conveyor systems, and warehouse management software is commonly required. Reliability, teamwork, and the ability to work efficiently under deadlines are important soft skills in this field. These skills ensure safe, accurate, and timely packaging of products, which is critical for maintaining product integrity and meeting production goals.

Packaging professionals often collaborate with teams from design, marketing, manufacturing, and logistics. One of the main challenges is balancing creative design ideas with practical manufacturing constraints and cost considerations. Clear communication and early involvement in project discussions are key to ensuring packaging solutions meet aesthetic, functional, and budgetary requirements. Developing strong relationships across departments can help address potential conflicts and streamline the packaging development process.

Job description

Packaging Solutions Outside Sales Rep

Location: Richmond, VA or Winchester, VA (Field-Based / Territory Sales)

Pay Rate: $80,000–$130,000 guaranteed compensation for your first 2 years, based on experience — with flexibility up to $150,000+ for the right candidate. After that: 100% commission, fully uncapped.

Overview

The top two outside sales reps earned roughly $1.6M last year. The #3 and #4 reps cleared $200K+. The average rep, five years in, is earning at least $200K annually — and there is no ceiling on any of it.

For more than 60 years, this third-generation, family-owned packaging company has helped manufacturers — from scrappy startups to Fortune 100 plants — design, build, and automate the packaging that gets their product out the door. They dig into a customer's entire packaging process, from design through automation and shipping. They've just completed a multi-million-dollar investment in next-generation, high-graphics corrugated printing technology — the first installation of its kind in North America — putting them in a strong position to grow their sales team.. With 250+ employees, $200M+ in annual revenue, and a sales force of 60+ reps across three states, this is real infrastructure and stability, not a startup gamble. This will be a new geographic territory.

Day-to-Day:

  • True hunter role — prospect, cold call, network, and build relationships with manufacturers from scratch; no leads provided, no inherited accounts
  • Win new business and keep it — once you land an account, it's yours to service and grow long-term; there's no handoff to a separate account manager
  • Sell without territory walls — if your VA network surfaces an opportunity in New York, you're free to chase it
  • Take a consultative, solution-based approach — understand a customer's packaging and operational pain points and recommend the right fix, not just the cheapest box
  • Partner with an in-house design, engineering, and manufacturing team to bring custom packaging and automation solutions to life
  • Compete on value against commodity, price-driven competitors

Compensation & Perks

  • $80,000–$130,000 guaranteed compensation for your first 2 years, based on your current earnings, sales/packaging experience, and existing book of business — flexible up to $150,000+ guaranteed for a proven competitor rep with a strong book
  • Once you transition off guarantee: 30% commission on gross profit generated, fully uncapped — and if you exceed your monthly GP quota while still on guarantee, you start earning commission on top of your base immediately
  • Medical benefits eligible after 30 days
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Gas card and/or vehicle stipend available on request — flexible and negotiable, especially if you're coming from a company that already provided one

Requirements

  • 3–5+ years of B2B outside sales experience in packaging— titles like Outside Sales Rep, Account Manager, Territory Business Manager, or Business Development Manager all translate
  • A true consultative, value-based sales background — you sell solutions, not the lowest price
  • Proven track record building new business from scratch: cold calling, prospecting, and creating relationships where none existed before
  • No degree required

Nice to have: local to Richmond, VA or Winchester, VA; veterans are strongly encouraged to apply; candidates from industrial B2B/distribution sales backgrounds (even without direct packaging experience) will also be considered

Background check and drug screening required.

This is not a remote-from-anywhere role — it's a field-based, territory-specific position covering the Richmond, VA / Winchester, VA area, and local candidates are strongly preferred. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
