Position Overview

Northrop Grumman is seeking a skilled Milling Machine Machinist 1 to support manufacturing operations in Palmdale, CA. The selected candidate will set up and operate horizontal, multi-axis, and vertical CNC machines to perform precision machining operations involving complex contours, compound angles, helical milling, boring, gear cutting, spline cutting, and keyway machining.

The ideal candidate will have experience with CNC machining, robotics, precision measurement tools, blueprint interpretation, and quality inspection processes while maintaining strict adherence to safety and manufacturing standards.


Key ResponsibilitiesCNC Machining Operations
  • Set up and operate horizontal, vertical, and multi-axis numerical control (CNC) milling machines.

  • Perform machining operations including:

    • Compound angle machining

    • Contour milling

    • Helical and spiral milling

    • Boring compound angular holes

    • Serrating

    • Gear cutting

    • Spline cutting

    • Keyway cutting

  • Machine components to exacting tolerances and engineering specifications.

Machine Setup & Tooling
  • Select, mount, align, and adjust specialized machine attachments.

  • Install and configure standard and custom tooling as required.

  • Determine machining sequences, number of cuts, and optimal setup methods.

  • Establish and monitor feeds, speeds, tooling offsets, and cutting parameters.

Blueprint & Technical Interpretation
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, sketches, and manufacturing specifications.

  • Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points for machining operations.

  • Apply standard shop mathematics and machining calculations.

Precision Measurement & Inspection
  • Utilize precision measuring instruments including:

    • Micrometers

    • Dial Indicators

    • Preset Torque Tools

    • Reference Inspection Gauges

    • Calipers

    • Precision Measurement Equipment

  • Verify dimensional accuracy and conformance to specifications.

  • Conduct in-process and final inspections.

Equipment Monitoring & Automation Support
  • Monitor CNC equipment, robotic systems, and automated manufacturing processes.

  • Utilize computer-controlled interfaces and Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs).

  • Identify and report machine performance issues and operational concerns.

Quality Assurance
  • Perform routine quality checks and inspections.

  • Ensure products meet engineering specifications and quality standards.

  • Support Statistical Process Control (SPC) and other quality control initiatives.

Documentation & Reporting
  • Maintain production records and machining documentation.

  • Record machine downtime, maintenance activities, and performance metrics.

  • Complete manufacturing and inspection documentation accurately.

  • Utilize required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Required Qualifications
