What does an in house litigation paralegal do?

An In House Litigation Paralegal supports a company's legal team by assisting with all aspects of litigation, such as organizing legal documents, conducting research, managing case files, and coordinating with outside counsel. Unlike paralegals in law firms, in-house paralegals work directly for a corporation and help manage the company's legal matters internally. Their role often includes drafting documents, preparing discovery materials, and helping ensure compliance with legal procedures throughout a case.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an in house litigation paralegal, and why are they important?

To thrive as an In House Litigation Paralegal, you need a solid understanding of legal procedures, case management, and strong organizational skills, often supported by a paralegal certificate or relevant degree. Familiarity with litigation management software, e-discovery platforms, and legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis is typically required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to work well under pressure are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure efficient case preparation, accurate document handling, and valuable support to in-house counsel during complex litigation processes.

What are some common challenges faced by in house litigation paralegals compared to those working at law firms?

In-house litigation paralegals often face the unique challenge of managing a broader range of legal matters simultaneously, as they typically support multiple departments within the organization. Unlike law firm paralegals who may focus on a single case or client, in-house paralegals must juggle several ongoing disputes, regulatory issues, and internal investigations. They also work more closely with business units and outside counsel, requiring strong communication and project management skills. Adapting to the company's internal processes and aligning legal strategies with business priorities are essential for success in this environment.
