In Design Technology information

What do you do in design technology?

In design technology, professionals develop and implement innovative solutions by combining design principles with technological tools such as CAD software, 3D modeling, and prototyping. They often collaborate with engineers and designers to create functional, efficient, and aesthetically appealing products or systems. Strong technical skills, creativity, and knowledge of industry standards are essential in this role.

What careers use InDesign?

InDesign is widely used in careers such as graphic design, publishing, marketing, and advertising. Professionals in these fields use InDesign to create layouts for magazines, brochures, books, and digital publications, often requiring skills in typography and visual communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Technology professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Technology professional, you need a strong background in design principles, engineering concepts, and problem-solving, often supported by a relevant degree or technical diploma. Proficiency with CAD software, 3D modeling tools, and rapid prototyping systems is typically required. Creative thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating on innovative projects and presenting ideas clearly. These skills ensure the successful development and realization of functional, user-centered designs in competitive industries.

What jobs can I do with design technology?

With a background in design technology, you can pursue roles such as design technologist, user experience (UX) designer, product designer, or digital designer. These jobs often require skills in graphic design, prototyping tools, and understanding of user-centered design principles, and may involve working in creative, tech, or advertising environments.

What is the difference between In Design Technology vs Graphic Designer?

AspectIn Design TechnologyGraphic Designer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in design, technology, or related fields; certifications in Adobe Creative Suite are commonUsually holds a degree in graphic design, visual arts, or similar; certifications in design software are beneficial
Work EnvironmentOften works in digital or print media production, collaborating with tech teams and clientsPrimarily works in creative studios or freelance settings, focusing on visual communication
Industry UsageUsed in advertising, publishing, digital media, and branding projectsCommonly employed in marketing, advertising, publishing, and branding

In Design Technology and Graphic Designer roles share overlapping skills in design software and creative processes. However, In Design Technology often emphasizes technical implementation and digital media production, while Graphic Designers focus more on visual aesthetics and branding. Both roles are vital in media and marketing industries, with their distinctions mainly in technical versus creative emphasis.

What is design technology?

Design technology is a field that combines creativity, engineering, and technology to design and create innovative products, systems, or solutions. Professionals in design technology use a mix of technical skills—such as CAD (computer-aided design), prototyping, and materials science—alongside problem-solving and design thinking. The field covers various industries, including product design, architecture, engineering, and digital media. Design technologists often collaborate in multidisciplinary teams to turn ideas into functional and aesthetic outcomes.

How does a role in Design Technology typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Professionals in Design Technology frequently work alongside teams such as engineering, marketing, and product management to ensure that design concepts are feasible, user-friendly, and aligned with business goals. Regular meetings and collaborative software tools are commonly used to facilitate communication and coordinate project milestones. This cross-functional teamwork helps to integrate user experience, technical constraints, and market needs into the final product. Being open to feedback and adaptable to changing requirements are important aspects of thriving in this collaborative environment.

What careers can you do with EGD?

In Design Technology, careers include roles such as CAD designer, digital artist, or 3D modeler, often requiring skills in design software like Adobe Creative Suite or CAD programs. These positions typically involve working in creative, technical, or manufacturing environments and may require certifications or a background in design or engineering. EGD skills can also lead to opportunities in product development, graphic design, or multimedia production.

Job description

Position Summary

The primary focus for a technology analyst on the Design Technologies team will be to support the detailers, engineers, VDC teams, and other groups integral to the design project lifecycle across Southland’s national footprint. This role will focus on maintaining standards, improving efficiency of existing processes, and documenting updates and changes to workflows for the teams and software that we support. This includes, but is not limited to, Revit project templates, project setup processes, approved third‑party Revit modeling tools, internal custom development initiatives, and SharePoint pages that document these functions. The position will require thorough attention to detail, change management skills, and an emphasis on relationship building across the organization.

Position Details

  • Relationship Building/Management
    • Effectively build strong working relationships and communicate with internal stakeholders, including fellow AEC team members, detailers, engineers, IT, and divisional leadership, to ensure alignment on design technology goals and strategies.

    • Collaborate with Southland internal teams and external vendors to ensure design technology standards are being met and new standards are being integrated properly.

    • Communicate with employees at all levels regarding design technology solutions, standardization, and application support assistance.

  • Workflow Optimization

    • Work closely with divisional teams, vendors, and business teams to configure settings, workflows, and features based on divisional requirements.

    • Analyze current design processes and workflows to identify areas where existing or custom design technology can reduce inefficiencies, improve accuracy, and increase productivity.

  • Technology Deployment

    • Support the analysis, testing, and end‑to‑end implementation of AEC design technology initiatives, including new third‑party application adoption, custom development efforts, enterprise software alignment and standardization, and associated training rollouts across Southland.

    • Ensure all AEC design technologies processes are integrated seamlessly into ongoing projects, from initial setup to final documentation and turnover.

    • Stay informed on emerging technologies, evaluate their feasibility, and assist in pilot programs to test potential new tools and systems.

  • Change Management

    • Assist in the development and execution of change management strategy for new design technology rollouts and updates, ensuring smooth adoption across design teams and minimizing disruption.

    • Involvement in feedback loops to gather insights from design teams and other users to continuously improve technology adoption and refine processes.

    • Assist in the composition and implementation of both in-person and remote training programs and learning opportunities to ensure team members are proficient in using new tools and systems.

  • Support and Documentation

    • Provide ongoing support to detailers, engineers, VDC teams, and other groups, troubleshooting issues and ensuring software and processes function as expected.
