In Design Technology information

What do you do in design technology?

In design technology, professionals develop and implement innovative solutions by combining design principles with technological tools such as CAD software, 3D modeling, and prototyping. They often collaborate with engineers, designers, and clients to create functional and aesthetically appealing products or systems, requiring technical skills and knowledge of industry standards. The role may involve project management, testing, and refining designs to meet specifications and user needs.

What careers use InDesign?

InDesign is widely used in careers such as graphic design, publishing, marketing, and advertising, where creating layouts for print and digital media is essential. Professionals in these roles often use InDesign alongside other Adobe Creative Cloud tools and may require skills in typography, layout design, and project management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Technology professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Technology professional, you need a strong background in design principles, engineering concepts, and problem-solving, often supported by a relevant degree or technical diploma. Proficiency with CAD software, 3D modeling tools, and rapid prototyping systems is typically required. Creative thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating on innovative projects and presenting ideas clearly. These skills ensure the successful development and realization of functional, user-centered designs in competitive industries.

What jobs can I do with design technology?

With a background in design technology, you can pursue roles such as design technologist, user experience (UX) designer, product designer, or digital designer. These jobs often require skills in graphic design, prototyping tools, and understanding of user-centered design principles, and may involve working in creative, tech, or advertising environments.

What jobs combine Design and Technology?

Jobs that combine Design and Technology include roles like User Experience (UX) Designer, Interaction Designer, Product Designer, and Digital Designer. These positions often require skills in graphic design, user research, and proficiency with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite and prototyping software, working in collaborative environments to develop innovative digital products.

What is the difference between In Design Technology vs Graphic Designer?

AspectIn Design TechnologyGraphic Designer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in design, technology, or related fields; certifications in Adobe Creative Suite are commonUsually holds a degree in graphic design, visual arts, or similar; certifications in design software are beneficial
Work EnvironmentOften works in digital or print media production, collaborating with tech teams and clientsPrimarily works in creative studios or freelance settings, focusing on visual communication
Industry UsageUsed in advertising, publishing, digital media, and branding projectsCommonly employed in marketing, advertising, publishing, and branding

In Design Technology and Graphic Designer roles share overlapping skills in design software and creative processes. However, In Design Technology often emphasizes technical implementation and digital media production, while Graphic Designers focus more on visual aesthetics and branding. Both roles are vital in media and marketing industries, with their distinctions mainly in technical versus creative emphasis.

What is design technology?

Design technology is a field that combines creativity, engineering, and technology to design and create innovative products, systems, or solutions. Professionals in design technology use a mix of technical skills—such as CAD (computer-aided design), prototyping, and materials science—alongside problem-solving and design thinking. The field covers various industries, including product design, architecture, engineering, and digital media. Design technologists often collaborate in multidisciplinary teams to turn ideas into functional and aesthetic outcomes.

How does a role in Design Technology typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Professionals in Design Technology frequently work alongside teams such as engineering, marketing, and product management to ensure that design concepts are feasible, user-friendly, and aligned with business goals. Regular meetings and collaborative software tools are commonly used to facilitate communication and coordinate project milestones. This cross-functional teamwork helps to integrate user experience, technical constraints, and market needs into the final product. Being open to feedback and adaptable to changing requirements are important aspects of thriving in this collaborative environment.

Job description

Description
The BIM Manager leads HLB's firmwide BIM program for lighting design delivery. This role owns the standards, tools, data structures, and training that enable consistent, high-quality modeling and documentation across all offices and project types. The BIM Manager ensures BIM supports design intent, coordination, and project outcomes.
This role is equal parts strategy and execution: setting direction, building systems, and directly enabling teams on high-impact projects. The BIM Manager represents HLB's BIM capability externally, strengthens client confidence, and keeps HLB current with emerging platforms, interoperability, automation, and Al-enabled workflows.
Responsibilities
  • Project: The BIM Manager defines and leads BIM Execution Plans for lighting design scope, deliverables, and coordination requirements. The role ensures that lighting-specific BIM workflows support design intent, documentation accuracy, and constructability across all project phases.

The BIM Manager provides BIM leadership on key projects, including milestone reviews and targeted QA/QC, and actively works to reduce rework and coordination issues related to lighting systems and integrated building systems.
  • Clients: The BIM Manager supports client BIM discussions by clearly defining scope, deliverables, and expectations related to lighting design. The role represents HLB's BIM capabilities with confidence and clarity, aligning lighting BIM deliverables with architect and engineering coordination standards.

Through consistent execution and clear communication, the BIM Manager strengthens client outcomes by enabling predictable, high-quality BIM delivery.
  • Team/Management: The BIM Manager leads firmwide BIM training programs aligned to role levels and project needs, including education on emerging tools and workflows.

The role mentors the BIM team and project teams through direct support and structured guidance, while driving adoption of BIM standards through clear documentation, coaching, and effective change management.
The BIM Manager conducts performance reviews and supports the professional development of BIM-focused staff across the firm.
  • Firm: The BIM Manager owns and maintains firmwide BIM standards, templates, and model governance specific to lighting design. The role leads the development and ongoing maintenance of the HLB lighting content library, including families, parameters, and data standards.

The BIM Manager develops and maintains production-safe automation tools that measurably improve efficiency and quality, collaborates with leadership to define a BIM roadmap aligned with corporate goals, and manages vendor and platform relationships related to BIM tools and content.
The role also represents HLB in industry forums and tracks emerging BIM, automation, and Al technologies, establishing guidelines for their effective and controlled use within the firm.
Requirements
Skill Set
  • Deep knowledge of Revit, including templates, families, worksharing, schedules, model performance, automation, and custom scripting.
  • Deep understanding of lighting design BIM workflows, coordination constraints, and documentation standards.
  • Familiarity with emerging digital and Al-assisted tools, with the ability to evaluate their applicability and integration into BIM processes.
  • Proven ability to build and govern firmwide BIM standards that teams consistently adopt.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and change management skills.
  • Ability to balance strategic planning with hands-on project support.
  • Confidence working with executives, project leadership, and external consultants.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, design technology, construction technology, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 10+ years of BIM delivery experience, with at least 3+ years in a leadership or firmwide standards role.
  • Experience in lighting design, MEP, architecture, or specialty consultancy environments with complex coordination

Compensation
$95,300 to $101,000
The final agreed upon compensation is based on cost of living, individual education, qualifications, and experience.
Benefit Clause: Includes but not limited to Medical, Dental & Vision plans, flexible spending account, 401(k) plans, life & AD&D insurance, short/long term disability plans, holidays, and paid time off.
