Job description

SUMMARY: The mission of the Agency for New Americans (ANA) is to assist refugees in achieving self-sufficiency in their new lives in Boise. The Immigration Specialist provides immigration services to refugees, immigrants, asylees, Afghan and Ukrainian Humanitarian Paroles and Special Immigration Visa (SIV) clients. This position reports to the ANA Program Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interpret immigration and department policies;
  • Conduct initial assessments on immigration cases to determine eligibility for immigration benefits;
  • Assist clients with various immigration and family reunification processes;
  • Ensure immigration paperwork and applications are completed accurately and in timely manner;
  • Refer clients to an immigration attorney for cases that are too complicated for ANA services;
  • Maintain information in designated database;
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS), government and social service organizations, and community organizations;
  • Remain current on immigration law, policies and procedures;
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work effectively with refugee families of diverse backgrounds;
  • Readiness to become DOJ, OLAP partially accredited representative ASAP
  • Organized and pay attention to details;
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently when required while maintaining team orientation toward the provision of services;
  • Ability to work as a part of a team with other staff members;
  • Understanding of the challenges facing newly resettled refugees;
  • Multicultural work or volunteer experience, preferably with refugee and immigrant populations;
  • Ability to interpret and follow applicable rules and guidelines;
  • Excellent verbal and written skills;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) required;
  • Access to reliable transportation and proof of state mandated automobile liability insurance coverage.
  • Completion of a criminal history background check post offer of employment;
  • Bi-lingual ability preferred: Pashto, Dari or Swahili language

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree in a related area of study, or equivalent work experience in related field preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

A valid driver’s license is required. Working towards Bureau of Immigration Affairs accreditation with Department of Justice, Office of Legal Access Programs.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works in general office environment, in family participant’s homes and outdoors.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to tolerate heat and cold, and to drive to family participants’ homes in varied weather conditions. Sitting, standing, walking, driving, repeated hand and wrist motions (for computer use) are required. May be required to lift up to 25 pounds.
