Job description

The Ansob Center for refugees and immigrants is a Non-Profit organization serving refugees, asylees, and immigrants by offering Free ESL Classes, Free Citizenship Classes, and Free Immigration Legal Services including applying for citizenship, Green Card applications, Work Permit applications, DACA renewal, GC renewal, travel documents, and family-based petitions.

We are looking for an Experienced Paralegal who is committed and reliable. The Immigration Paralegal will be responsible for supporting the Immigration Attorneys and the DOJ Accredited Representative in order to provide legal assistance and information to our clients.

Must be fluent in English or native speaker. The ability to speak a second language is highly desirable but not required.

This is NOT a remote position. It is on-site in Astoria, NY so please make sure you can commute to work.

The paralegal's responsibilities will include the following tasks :

Schedule and conduct intake appointments and immigration screenings for clients who are seeking immigration legal assistance.

  • Provide clients with up-to-date information and guidance on immigration policy changes.
  • Work with the Immigration Attorneys and DOJ Accredited representatives to assist immigrants in becoming US Citizens.
  • Help clients in completing and gathering documents for various USICS applications
  • Follow up with clients by phone, email, or mail about their interviews or any other USCIS correspondence.
  • Perform administrative tasks including answering phones, faxing, photocopying, scanning, and mailing relevant documents and applications.
  • Perform outreach activities for the program.

Position Days and Hours:

The preferred schedule would be :

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday possibly from 11 am to 5 pm (More hours available for the best candidate )

Qualifications :

Strong interest in working with refugees and immigrants. Fluent in English or native speaker. The ability to speak a second language is desirable but not required.

Bachelor’s Degree, with a minimum of two years experience in immigration legal services required.

Broad knowledge of immigration law and procedures required.

Other relevant degrees and experience to be eligible to become accredited with the Department of Justice within six months of hire.

The Candidate must have strong computer skills and proficiency in working with Microsoft Word and Excel as well as performing data entry tasks.

Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Detail-oriented, punctual, and respectful to all cultures and backgrounds. Motivation and having potential and a strong passion to help refugees and immigrants is also an asset.

Must be flexible and willing to help out.

Our hours are flexible as the Center is open Monday through Thursday from 10 am to 8 pm so we can work with you based on a flexible schedule.

At least 20 hours a week would be needed.

If the candidate has ESL/CIVICS Teaching Experience, there is a potential for more hours to teach ESL/CIVICS Classes.

We follow the CDC rules regarding maintaining Social Distancing, mask-wearing, and vaccination policy. We will provide you with Personal Protective Equipment.
