Job description

The Associate Engineer will assist with planning, coordinating, and performing engineering assignments related to the design, implementation, and support of wireless data telecommunications systems used to support electric operations at Eversource
Role and Scope of Position:
The Associate Engineer will assist with planning, coordinating, and performing engineering assignments related to the design, implementation, and support of wireless data telecommunications systems used to support electric operations at Eversource. The individual will work closely with senior engineering staff, Field Communications and SCADA support personnel to develop foundational knowledge of distribution automation communications networks, associated technologies, and operational requirements. Training, mentoring, and on-the-job learning will be provided.
Essential Functions:
  • Assist with planning, coordination, and engineering assignments (design and implementation) in support of wireless data telecommunication systems for Eversource.
  • Support project design, implementation and operation of the wireless SCADA data telecommunication systems to support Eversource's Electric operations.
  • Provide support for field construction and maintenance of wireless SCADA data telecommunication assets/infrastructure including digital microwave, mobile and fixed wireless networks, paging systems and subsystems.
  • Participate in data analysis of wireless SCADA data communication systems in support of continued enhancement and troubleshooting of SCADA data applications.
  • Assist with the configuration and specification of SCADA data wireless telecom equipment / hardware and its interface to field RTU devices.
  • Support troubleshooting of events on the distribution system where a field device communication is identified to have mis-operated or impacted remote operations.
  • Learn and comply with Company requirements and standards set forth by industry organizations and regulatory bodies such as IEEE, IEC, NERC etc.
  • Exhibit a positive, flexible, and professional attitude when working through challenges and changing priorities.
  • Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:

Technical Knowledge/Skill:
  • Foundational understanding of general engineering principles, prior experience with SCADA systems, DNP 3.0 protocol, or utility telecommunications is not required.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new technologies, tools, and engineering concepts related to wireless communications and electric utility operations.
  • Basic understanding of data, networking, or communications concepts gained through coursework is beneficial but not required.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of an engineering team and follow guidance from senior staff.

Education:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, or related discipline.

Experience:
  • Zero (0) to three (3) years of experience in the design, implementation and support of wireless SCADA data telecommunications systems.
  • Internship, co-op, academic project, or laboratory experience related to engineering, communications, networking, or power systems is preferred but not required
  • Understanding of electric utility systems is strongly preferred.

Licenses & Certifications:
  • None required.

Working Conditions:
  • Must be available to work emergency storm assignment as required.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
  • Travel throughout the service territory is required 20% of the time, which involves working in an industrial environment including climbing ladders, walking on uneven surfaces and exposure to outdoor elements. The other 80% of work is performed in an office environment which requires standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, and writing and typing. Selected candidate will have a storm response role defined and will be expected to support restoration activity.
