What is an Immersive job?

An Immersive job typically involves working in fields related to virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), or other interactive digital experiences. Professionals in this role create, design, or develop immersive content and technologies for industries like gaming, education, healthcare, and training. These jobs often require skills in 3D modeling, programming, UX/UI design, and storytelling to craft engaging digital environments.

What types of projects or responsibilities can an immersive technology professional expect on a typical day?

As an immersive technology professional, you may work on a variety of projects such as developing interactive VR simulations, designing AR experiences for marketing, or building training modules using cutting-edge platforms. Daily tasks often include collaborating with designers, developers, and content creators to prototype and refine immersive content, as well as testing and troubleshooting new features on different hardware. You may also participate in user experience research, integrate user feedback, and stay updated on the latest technological advancements. This dynamic environment encourages teamwork, creativity, and continuous learning as you contribute to innovative digital experiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Immersive position, and why are they important?

To excel in an immersive technology role, a strong background in interactive design, 3D modeling, and experience with AR/VR development platforms like Unity or Unreal Engine are essential, often supported by a related degree or certification. Familiarity with hardware such as VR headsets, motion capture systems, and spatial audio tools is typically required. Creative problem-solving, adaptability, and effective collaboration are crucial soft skills in this fast-evolving field. Mastery of these skills ensures the ability to create engaging, cutting-edge immersive experiences that meet user needs and industry standards.

Job description

PBK is seeking an Immersive Experience Designer to join its Immersive Experience Design (IxD) Lab, a small, fast-moving studio focused on creating technology-driven environments for education, civic, and cultural projects.
This is a hands-on design role for someone who can take big ideas and quickly turn them into real, spatially resolved concepts.
You will work directly with the Director of IxD to develop immersive environments that integrate architecture, digital content, and storytelling. This role is critical to scaling the studio's ability to deliver high-impact work.
Your Impact:
  • Lead the spatial development of immersive environments, translating conceptual ideas into real, technically feasible designs.
  • Create and manage 3D models, diagrams, and spatial systems that support interactive, experiential, and exhibit-based projects.
  • This role plays a critical part in scaling the Immersive Experience studio's ability to deliver high-impact immersive projects and will have meaningful influence over how the studio evolves.
  • Collaborate with architects, designers, and digital experience teams to ensure design intent carries through from concept to execution.
  • Help resolve technical and spatial challenges related to fabrication, AV integration, and emerging technologies.
  • Support early-stage concept development through modeling, visual studies, and design exploration.
  • Contribute to presentations and design narratives for clients, stakeholders, and project teams.
  • Act as a key bridge between creative vision and real-world implementation.

Here's What You'll Need:
  • ***ALL APPLICANTS MUST HAVE A PORTFOLIO AND RESUME TO BE CONSIDERED***
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Design, or a related field.
  • A portfolio demonstrating strong spatial design thinking, 3D modeling, and concept development.
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling and visualization tools such as SketchUp, Rhino, Revit, D5, Lumion, Enscape, or similar.
  • Strong understanding of spatial design principles and experience working on architectural or experiential projects.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in a related field.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines.
  • Comfort working in early-stage, conceptual environments where problems are often undefined and solutions require exploration.

Here's How You'll Stand Out:
  • Experience with immersive, exhibit, museum, experiential, or themed environments.
  • Familiarity with AV systems, fabrication processes, or design-build workflows.
  • Proficiency in advanced tools such as Rhino/Grasshopper, Unreal Engine, TouchDesigner, or similar.
  • Ability to think systemically about how spaces, technology, content, and users interact.
  • Passion for emerging technologies and interest in how digital tools shape physical environments.
  • A desire to take ownership, grow into a leadership role, and help shape a developing creative studio.

This role offers strong growth potential and the opportunity to help define the future direction of PBK's immersive experience practice.
