SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of the CT Manager, Lead CT Technologists, and the Imaging Coordinator according to established procedures, operates a CT scanner and related equipment in order to produce radiographs of any designated anatomical area. Collects and completes records on patient data and equipment operation. Provides assistance to patients and Radiologists. Solves minor equipment problems. Performs calibration tests and other quality control functions on equipment and notifies service personnel as required. All essential functions performed in the position reflect age specific needs of the geriatric, adult, and pediatric patients. Fosters patient and family centered care and nursing services in accordance with the Brown University Health mission, vision, and values, with consideration of the life span, including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operates CT scanner by performing the following procedures:
a.Checks and tests calibration of the equipment, to ensure that it is operating properly.
b.Energizes gantry, image processor, and x-ray power supply in proper sequences.
c.Positions patient and equipment
d.Selects width and thickness of tomography slice, scan speed, and number of scans and table incrementation (Proper protocol selection).
e.Using computer commands in proper sequence to perform scans.
Collects and completes computerized and manual records on patient data such as patient history number, image number and type of examination. Assigns and verifies appropriate charge code.
Screens patient for proper diet preparation, drug and food sensitivity, and pregnancy by questioning patients and whenever possible, reviewing medical referrals and medical records in order to avoid possible adverse reactions to treatment.
Prepares supplies for injection of contrast medium. Operates pressure injector.
Monitors patients and equipment during scan process for any changes in condition.
Performs specialized non-routine computer functions as required to assist in diagnosis, including but not limiting to: 2D, 3D, MIP, and VRE.
Analyzes equipment problems and malfunctions and makes minor equipment repairs and adjustments. Obtains telephone direction of services engineer to make equipment adjustments. Arranges for maintenance of service personnel as required.
Maintains records such as calibration results for quality control, service reports, equipment notices, installation reports, incident reports, utilization statistics, and equipment performance standards.
Provides in-service education for students and staff technologists and maintains appropriate records.
May perform the function of a staff Radiologic Technologist as required.
Maintain CT Scan department workflow and staff efficiently for maximum throughput.
Remain proficient in special procedures, including but not limited to: biopsy, drainage, ablations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Meets basic knowledge requirements of CT Scan Technologist
Must be registered and in good standing with the American Registry of Radiological Technology (ARRT)
Must hold a current CPR certification from AHA, BLS for Healthcare Providers.
Must have a RI state radiation license and CT supplemental license from the DOH.
Two years of formal training in an approved School of Radiologic Technology requires, plus registration through the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists.
Current, valid license from the Department of Health to practice in the state of Rhode Island.
An in-depth knowledge of all the technical aspects of diagnostic radiologic procedures.
Basic understanding of the operation of computer consoles.
An in-depth knowledge of the operation of the computerized tomographic equipment in order to analyze equipment problems and arrange for its repair.
The interpersonal skills necessary to interface effectively with patients, patient’s families, departmental staff, physicians, and others.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
For consideration of a CT Scan Technologist II position, you will require the following:
Two letters of recommendation obtained within the previous three months from technical, supervisory or medical staff members in CT Scan attesting to the technologist’s level of professionalism and technical competency. Also two criteria from among the following, selected by the technologist as the means by which he/she will complete the qualification process for the Technologist II position.
Take an active advanced teaching role in one of the Schools of Technology, such as teaching didactic courses, presenting lectures or performing the duties of the clinical coordinator, provided the technologist is qualified under the Essentials and Guidelines of an accredited educational program for the Radiographer adopted by the American College of Radiology, American Medical Association, and American Society of Radiologic Technologists.
Develop new methods of patient tracking of exams, quality control, testing efficiency, CT Scan safety or quality assurance.
Prepare at least one in-service program to be delivered at least three times in one year. The program shall be approved by the American Society of Radiologic Technology for the equivalent of at least one continuing education unit.
Hold an office in or actively serve on a clinical practice committee of a professional organization relevant to the technologist’s specialized modality.
Participate as a regular member of a technical, clinical or quality assurance committee within Medical Imaging as evidenced by minutes of the meeting.
Write and publish an article in a recognized professional journal or receive published acknowledgment by the first author of the technologist’s contribution.
Coordinate the development, implementation and approval for a new procedure or protocol that enhances efficiency and/or quality of work in the section.
EXPERIENCE:
Six months’ experience as a Radiologic Technologist in a hospital radiology department, plus six months specialized training in the operation of the CT Scanner.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Meets requirements of CT Scan Technologist
Work location is generally in the CT Scan area or satellite areas where there is little discomfort due to noise, dust or temperature.
Exposed to radiation, but there is little chance of injury when established safety procedures are followed.
Long periods of standing, along with walking, pushing potable equipment and lifting and positioning of patients is required.
INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Executes administrative tasks delegated by Lead CT Technologists, CT Manager or Imaging Coordinator.
Performs independently within department policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.

None.
