Imaging Library Representative Jobs (NOW HIRING)

Introduction Pamunkey Regional Library is seeking a skilled and service-oriented Systems Engineer to support the technology infrastructure that powers all library services and operations. This role plays a critical part in ensuring reliable, secure, and user-focused technology across the library system, enabling staff to serve the public effectively and efficiently. The Systems Engineer works collaboratively across departments to design, support, and improve systems that impact public access, internal operations, and digital services.

Pamunkey Regional Library is seeking a knowledgeable, service-oriented Systems Engineer to design, implement, and maintain the network and systems infrastructure that supports all Library locations. This role is responsible for enterprise networking (switching, routing, firewalls, and VPN connectivity between branches), Windows systems administration, and the public computing environment that branch staff and patrons depend on.

About This Role Network Infrastructure & Security Configure, and maintain the Library's wide area network (WAN) connecting the Administrative Office and all seven branch libraries, including routers, managed switches, and firewalls. Configure, monitor, and troubleshoot site-to-site VPN tunnels between branch locations, as well as remote access VPN for staff and authorized remote support.

Manage firewall policies, VLAN segmentation, and access control lists to protect the Library's network, systems, and patron data. Monitor network performance and availability; respond to and resolve outages and connectivity issues across all sites. Systems Administration Administer Microsoft Active Directory, including user and group accounts, organizational units, Group Policy Objects, and permissions.

Install, configure, and maintain Windows servers and core services such as DNS, DHCP, file/print services, and virtualization. Manage system backups and support disaster recovery planning to protect Library data. Support the Library's integrated library system (ILS) and other business-critical applications in coordination with vendors.

Public Computing & Computer Lab Management Develop and maintain methodologies, standards, and procedures for public computer labs across all branch locations, including session/reservation management, print management, and workstation imaging. Manage the deployment lifecycle of public and staff workstations - imaging, rollout, refresh, and retirement. End-User Support & Documentation Serve as an escalation point for help desk tickets involving network, server, and public-computing issues.

Provide on-site and remote technical support to staff at the Administrative Office and all branch libraries. Maintain accurate documentation of network diagrams, system configurations, and standard operating procedures. Perform other duties as assigned.

Customer Service and Support Provides responsive, professional, and courteous technical support to employees at all PRL locations. Communicates technical information clearly to employees with varying levels of technical knowledge. Approaches technology support with a service-oriented mindset, recognizing library staff as internal customers and library patrons as external customers.

Responds promptly to technology issues that affect public service and works to minimize disruptions to library operations. Provides respectful and patient assistance when interacting directly with library patrons regarding public computers, printing, Wi-Fi, self-check equipment, and other library technology. Keeps employees informed about the status of reported problems, expected timelines, and available workarounds.

Builds positive working relationships with branch staff and proactively seeks feedback about recurring technology needs. Demonstrates professionalism when representing Pamunkey Regional Library with vendors, county technology departments, partner organizations, and members of the public. Prioritizes technology issues based on their impact on customer service, public access, staff productivity, security, and library operations.

Recognizes that technology services are an essential component of Pamunkey Regional Library's overall customer experience and works to ensure systems are dependable, user-friendly, and responsive to staff and community needs. Minimum Requirements Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Three or more years of experience in systems administration, network engineering, or a similar IT role.

Hands-on experience with Microsoft Active Directory, including user/group management and Group Policy. Demonstrated experience configuring and maintaining firewalls, managed switches, and routers. Experience configuring and troubleshooting both site-to-site and remote access VPNs.

Experience supporting public-facing or shared-use computer labs, kiosks, or similar public computing environments. Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills across network, server, and desktop environments. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical staff and the public.

Valid driver's license and the ability to travel regularly among branch locations in Goochland and Hanover. Ability to lift and move IT equipment (computers, monitors, networking hardware) up to approximately 40-50 pounds. Work is primarily performed in an office and library setting, with occasional work in server rooms and network closets.

Work outside normal business hours may be required for system maintenance, upgrades, or emergency support. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:30 - 5:00. Preferences Experience working in a public library, K-12 or higher education, or local government IT environment.

Familiarity with public computer/session management and print management software (e.g., EnvisionWare, PC Reservation). Familiarity with an integrated library system (ILS) platform Industry certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Security+, Microsoft Certified: Windows Server, or Cisco CCNA. Experience with virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V) and cloud environments
