Job description

Responsibilities
Coastal Harbor Health System is comprised of a 145-bed hospital for children and adolescents, providing both short- and long-term inpatient care, and a 50-bed inpatient hospital serving men and women, ages 18 and up.   • This position is responsible for providing educational support and personal assistance for students under the direction of the teacher.
  • Assists with instruction for assigned students in support of, and under the direction of, the teacher. Prepares and supports the Classroom Teacher in differentiating and modifying activities and lessons to meet IEP requirements. Participates in in-service training programs. Assists individuals and/or small groups of students in various educational settings including the media center, computer lab, and community-based instructional settings. Assists with clerical duties under the direction of the Classroom Teacher or Principal. Performs other duties as necessary for the effectiveness of the organization and the safety of students. Works with teachers and related service providers on writing goals for the IEP.
  • Works with the district to ensure that all necessary paperwork is obtained for Evaluation Team Reports and Individualized Education Plans, that all needed signatures are obtained, that all time deadlines are met, and that all procedural safeguards for students and parents have been followed and are in place. Reviews all evaluation components, IEP goals, and progress reports to make sure that they are of high quality, appropriate, and procedurally compliant.
  • Monitors the progress of each IEP student in reaching his or her IEP goals and objectives and ensures progress reports are reported within the timeline. Keeps Education Director abreast of Special Education needs of assigned schools and coordinates SLP services if needed. Performs other duties on as-needed basis as determined by the Education Director.

Qualifications
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Required: Bachelor's degree; Special Education Teaching Certificate REQUIRED
Must meet highly qualified criteria for state licensure for Georgia:
  • Demonstrable ability to reinforce and differentiate material initially introduced by the teacher and to guide students with enrichment, remedial, and independent work as set up by the teacher
  • Knowledge of general office computer software applications, as well as use of the internet.
  • Appropriate oral and written communications skills with students, parents, and co-workers.
  • Must have the physical ability, dexterity, endurance, and temperament to work with students.
  • Experience with the set up and operation of instructional equipment and materials. Experience in managing the behavior of children. Experience with children with special needs

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Georgia Special Education Teaching Certificate Requirements:
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and policy/procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports, correspondence, and document client behavior. Ability to speak effectively before groups of clients or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
