Job description

ICON is looking to add an Architect / Building designer to the Design-Build team. As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team, you will design, evaluate, and deliver world-class high-performance buildings using ICON's technology set. As an ICONIC, you will be a leader and direct contributor to the development of entirely novel approaches to high-performance buildings and you will have the opportunity to work with your team to advance humankind's ability to provide dignified, affordable, resilient, and sustainable shelter to the world. This role is can be based at ICON's Austin, TX campus or ICON's Miami, FL campus and will report to the VP of Building Design.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborate in the architectural design and development of projects from concept through construction, leveraging ICON's proprietary 3D printing technologies to deliver innovative, high-performance buildings that redefine industry standards.
  • Contribute directly to the evolution of ICON's concrete 3D-printed wall system by optimizing for human comfort, safety, user experience, and sustainability. Ensure architectural integration with structural, MEP, and envelope systems.
  • Produce comprehensive construction documents including wall assembly drawings, building envelope details, and system diagrams, with a focus on integrating window and door systems, waterproofing, and weatherization strategies tailored to 3D-printed architecture.
  • Develop clear and effective documentation that supports field integration of envelope components and building systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing), ensuring constructability and performance.
  • Create drawings and specifications that communicate design intent as well as submittals to third-party agencies for code compliance and performance validation.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, print technicians, and construction operations teams to ensure seamless translation of digital design into successful physical implementation, bridging the gap between design vision and construction reality.
  • Review and coordinate consultant drawings to ensure adherence to design intent and compatibility with ICON's wall systems and construction methods.
  • Explore and develop novel architectural strategies that take full advantage of the design freedom, sustainability potential, and formal possibilities of additive manufacturing. Contribute to a continuous feedback loop with ICON's materials, robotics, and software teams.
  • Work closely with field teams during construction to resolve real-time challenges and to iterate on system improvements based on lessons learned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 2 to 7 years of experience in complex, multi-disciplinary design and analysis projects.
  • Professional degree in Architecture from an accredited institution.
  • Proficiency in Revit, Rhino, Google Suite, Adobe Suite, Enscape and various AI rendering platforms
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Working experience in all phases of design (concept design, schematic design, design development, construction documents)
  • Experience producing and organizing construction documents with an emphasis on building systems integration.
  • Experience in Construction Administration, including RFI and submittal review, and other general construction-related correspondence.
  • Working knowledge of the International Residential (IRC) and Building (IBC) codes, ADA guidelines and the fair housing act (FHA)
  • Working knowledge of the principles of concrete design & construction.
  • Desire to work with a highly collaborative team, on a quickly evolving product in a fast-paced environment.
  • Curiosity for novel architectural technologies, and desire to perfect the craft of construction.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Licensure not required, we support candidates pursuing certification.
  • Experience designing and delivering projects that integrate emerging construction technologies, such as 3D printing, robotics, prefab, or modular construction.
  • Familiarity with parametric and computational design tools (e.g., Grasshopper, Dynamo) to explore and optimize complex forms, workflows, or performance outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience in research and development environments, particularly contributing to prototype testing, materials research, or novel building systems.
  • Ability to develop and manage BIM standards and digital workflows for interdisciplinary collaboration and construction documentation.
  • Experience collaborating with or managing external consultants, including structural engineers, sustainability experts, and testing labs.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently and effectively in fast-paced, iterative environments.
  • Passion for designing for social impact, including housing innovation, affordability, and climate resilience.
