Job description

ICON is hiring a UX professional to own the user experience for a core product area within BuildOS - our software platform used by architects, builders, and construction operators. In this role, you will lead end-to-end UX work for tools that connect users to ICON's construction technology, from discovery research through design handoff. You will run customer interviews, map complex workflows, build prototypes, test them with real users, and write specs that engineering can build from. You will work alongside engineers, product leadership, and internal and external customers to shape what gets built and why. This role is based at ICON's Austin, TX office and reports to the Director of Product.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Discovery and Research: Run regular interviews with architects, engineers, and builders to learn their workflows, pain points, and unmet needs. Document assumptions, evidence gaps, and research priorities for your product area. Turn findings into clear insights that shape the roadmap.
Workflow Mapping and UX Design: Map user workflows and edge cases for complex, multi-step construction and design processes. Design for a range of users, from technical specialists to first-time operators with different levels of software fluency. Define data needs, integration points, and error states.
Wireframes and Prototypes: Create wireframes, interaction flows, and interactive prototypes in Figma or a similar tool. Deliver designs that are functional, polished, and clear.
Prototyping and Usability Testing: Build and test prototypes with target users on a regular cadence. Run lightweight usability tests and update designs based on real feedback. Check designs with engineering for technical feasibility before handoff.
Handoff and Engineering Collaboration: Deliver developer-ready specs with annotated designs, acceptance criteria, and interaction details. Work two or more sprints ahead of engineering so teams always have clear, well-defined work to pick up.
Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate daily with engineers, product leadership, and cross-functional partners. Present design choices to engineers, leaders, and customers in plain terms.
Strategic Alignment: Connect your design work to company-wide Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) so the user experience moves bigger goals forward.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 3+ in UX design, product design, or a similar role.
  • A portfolio showing end-to-end design work - research through shipped product, not visual design alone.
  • Experience running user interviews and turning qualitative research into design decisions.
  • Strong fluency with Figma or a similar tool for wireframing, prototyping, and design systems.
  • Experience designing for workflows with real constraints, not only consumer apps.
  • Clear communication skills. You can explain design choices to engineers, leaders, and customers.
  • Comfort working through ambiguity. You can define the problem, not just solve a defined one.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in construction technology, architecture, manufacturing, robotics, or another hardware-adjacent field.
  • Familiarity with 3D visualization, CAD tools, or spatial design interfaces.
  • Experience writing product specs or PRDs alongside design work.
  • Background in Jobs-to-Be-Done, continuous discovery, or similar product research frameworks.
  • Experience with design systems and component-based design patterns.
