What is an ice technician?

An Ice Technician is responsible for maintaining ice surfaces in arenas, rinks, and other facilities to ensure optimal conditions for skating and sports. Their duties include ice resurfacing, temperature and humidity control, and repairing imperfections. They also manage equipment like ice resurfacers (e.g., Zambonis) and ensure safety standards are met. Ice Technicians work in recreational, professional, and competitive settings, requiring attention to detail and technical skills.

What does an ice technician do?

A typical day for an Ice Technician involves inspecting and resurfacing ice, monitoring and adjusting refrigeration and climate control systems, and performing routine maintenance on equipment like Zambonis and dehumidifiers. You may also be responsible for painting and marking the ice, checking dasher boards and glass for safety, and coordinating with event staff to prepare for games or public skating sessions. Collaboration with facility managers, coaches, and other technicians is common to ensure all operations run smoothly. You should expect to work early mornings, evenings, or weekends, depending on the facility’s schedule and events.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an ice technician?

To thrive as an Ice Technician, you need expertise in ice maintenance, knowledge of refrigeration systems, and basic mechanical skills, often supported by technical training or certifications in refrigeration or arena operations. Familiarity with Zamboni or other ice resurfacing equipment, ice measuring tools, and water treatment systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and communication skills help you excel in this role. These skills are crucial for maintaining safe, high-quality ice surfaces and ensuring smooth operations in arenas or ice rinks.

How do you become an ice technician?

To become an ice technician, typically one needs a high school diploma or equivalent, along with training in ice machine maintenance and repair. Relevant skills include understanding refrigeration systems and safety procedures, and some employers may require certification in refrigeration or HVAC technology. On-the-job training is common, and physical stamina is important due to the nature of the work environment.

Job description

Ice Technician – The Rink at Rockefeller Center

2026–27 Season | October–Early Spring

Overview

SPS is seeking dependable, safety-minded, and detail-oriented individuals to join the operations team at The Rink at Rockefeller Center. As an Ice Technician, you will help maintain the quality, safety, and presentation of the ice and surrounding venue while supporting smooth day-to-day rink operations.

This hands-on role is primarily responsible for operating the ice resurfacer, completing ice maintenance, monitoring conditions, and keeping the rink and adjacent areas clean, safe, and guest-ready. Ice Technicians may also assist with general Skate House responsibilities and light repairs involving lockers, facilities, rental skates, and other rink equipment as needed.

The Rink is a seasonal cold-weather operation that runs rain or shine throughout the demanding winter. Candidates must be comfortable working indoors and outdoors in cold temperatures and changing weather conditions, including rain, snow, and wind. A portion of each shift may take place on or near the ice; an insulated winter jacket and vest will be provided.

Schedules may include early mornings, daytime hours, evenings, late nights, weekends, holidays, and other high-volume periods. Weekend and holiday availability is required, with dependable morning and late-night availability strongly preferred.

Summary of Position

Ice Technicians help ensure that the ice surface, equipment, and surrounding areas meet The Rink's safety, operational, and presentation standards. They operate the ice resurfacer, support ice cuts and maintenance, identify and report hazards or equipment concerns, and assist with general venue upkeep and Skate House operations. Safety is the first priority of this role — Ice Technicians work in and around guests and must operate equipment with constant awareness of everyone on and near the ice. Ice Technicians are also guest-facing team members and are expected to bring the same warm, professional presence as the rest of the team, and may be asked to fill in at any other position at The Rink as needed. Team members should be willing and able to assist in those areas when requested.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Operate the ice resurfacer safely and efficiently in accordance with established procedures.
  • Complete scheduled ice cuts and support routine ice maintenance throughout the operating day.
  • Monitor ice conditions and promptly report hazards, damage, or maintenance concerns to the Manager on Duty.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and orderly ice-side, rink-level, and surrounding venue areas.
  • Complete opening, closing, equipment checks, and operational resets as directed.
  • Assist with snow removal and weather-related venue upkeep as needed.
  • Support general Skate House operations, including rental skate organization, cleaning, sanitizing, and storage.
  • Complete light repairs and maintenance as needed, including lockers, facilities, rental skates, and other rink equipment.
  • Maintain and organize tools, supplies, and equipment; report shortages or repair needs promptly.
  • Follow all ice-resurfacing, equipment, guest-service, operating, and safety procedures.
  • Assist other departments and perform additional duties that support rink operations as needed.

Requirements

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Previous experience operating an ice resurfacer is required for this role.
  • Previous experience in ice rink operations or facility maintenance is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to follow procedures accurately.
  • Ability to identify and address routine operational, equipment, and maintenance concerns.
  • Ability to remain calm, reliable, and solutions-oriented in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Must complete all required safety, equipment, and ice-resurfacing training and consistently follow safe-operating and personal protective equipment procedures.
  • Consistent attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this role; team members are expected to arrive on time, in uniform, and ready for every assigned shift.
  • Willingness and ability to fill in at any other position at The Rink as needed, and to assist in other areas when requested. Training is provided.
  • Weekend, holiday, early morning, and late-night availability is required.
  • Comfort working indoors and outdoors in cold temperatures, rain, snow, wind, and changing winter conditions.
  • Ability to walk, stand, bend, kneel, reach, lift, stoop, push, pull, and carry throughout a shift.
  • Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds.
  • Must follow uniform, grooming, hygiene, and appearance guidelines.
  • Must comply with all policies and procedures established by SPS and The Rink at Rockefeller Center.
