What are IACS professionals and what do they do?

IACS stands for Industrial Automation and Control Systems professionals. These individuals are responsible for designing, implementing, managing, and securing automated control systems used in industries such as manufacturing, energy, water treatment, and transportation. Their work ensures that industrial processes are efficient, reliable, and safe, often involving technologies like SCADA, PLCs, and DCS. IACS professionals also play a key role in maintaining cybersecurity for these critical systems, protecting them from cyber threats and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Industrial Automation and Control Systems (IACS) Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IACS Engineer, a solid background in electrical engineering, automation, and control systems, often supported by a relevant engineering degree, is essential. Familiarity with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), SCADA systems, industrial networks, and certifications such as ISA/IEC 62443 are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication make someone stand out in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure reliable, secure, and efficient operation of critical industrial processes.

What is the difference between IACS vs Marine Electrician?

AspectIACSMarine Electrician
Required CertificationsTypically requires certifications in industrial automation and control systemsRequires marine electrician certifications and electrical licenses
Work EnvironmentIndustrial facilities, automation control rooms, manufacturing plantsShips, marine vessels, offshore platforms
Industry UsageIndustrial automation, manufacturing, process controlMaritime industry, shipping, offshore oil rigs
Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

While both IACS and Marine Electrician roles involve electrical systems, IACS specialists focus on industrial automation and control systems in manufacturing environments, whereas Marine Electricians work on electrical systems aboard ships and offshore platforms. The certifications, work settings, and industry applications differ, making each role unique despite some overlapping electrical skills.

What are some common challenges faced by IACS (Industrial Automation and Control Systems) professionals in maintaining system security?

IACS professionals often encounter challenges related to balancing operational uptime with rigorous cybersecurity requirements. Legacy equipment, which may not have been designed with modern security threats in mind, can be particularly vulnerable and difficult to update. Coordinating with both IT and OT (Operational Technology) teams to implement security measures without disrupting critical processes is another frequent challenge. Staying current with evolving threat landscapes and compliance standards also requires continuous learning and vigilance.

You will play a key role in strengthening the cybersecurity posture of Siemens Energy's installed base of vessel automation and control systems.
Your day will involve assessing existing Ship Automation systems against applicable maritime cybersecurity standards (e.g., CFR-33, IACS UR E26/E27), identifying gaps and risks, and defining practical hardening measures. You will collaborate with engineering, service, and commercial teams to translate technical findings into actionable upgrade and retrofit solutions. You will also support proposals and sales activities by providing cybersecurity engineering expertise for new opportunities and lifecycle upgrades.
How You'll Make an Impact
  • Perform cybersecurity assessments of existing vessels marine automation systems (IAS, PMS, DCS, Aux systems) and identify vulnerabilities and compliance gaps with relevant standards like CFR-33, IACS UR E26/E27, and others.
  • Support development of assessment methodologies and reporting templates.
  • Define upgrade paths with engineering teams, like hardening measures, retrofits etc.
  • Support sales and proposal teams with scope, estimates, and risk identification.
  • Communicate cybersecurity risks and mitigation strategies to internal stakeholders and customers.
  • Some travel to survey installations domestically and internationally should be expected
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Automation, Cybersecurity, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Marine or industrial experience with at least 2 years preferred.
  • PLC/SCADA/HMI proficiency or hands-on experience with automation systems.
  • Industrial cybersecurity knowledge or willingness to learn IEC 62443 and translate requirements into engineering solutions.
  • System assessment skills including gap analyses and evaluation of control system security.
  • OT network understanding with secure system design; familiarity with Siemens S7, TIA Portal, or PCS7 is a plus.
Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.
