Job description

Summary The Sanitation Division of the Public Works Department is seeking qualified applicants for a temporary Sanitation Worker I. The purpose of this position is to perform as a worker on the sanitation crew collecting trash and brush for the residents of the City of Asheville. Essential Duties and Responsibilities What you'll be doing: Picks up and loads debris and refuse, primarily brush and leaves, but may also collect bulky waste, animal carcasses, roadside litter, and trash.

Rides on the back of a rear-loading sanitation truck or drives a pickup truck, depending on route assigned. Verifies materials meet City guidelines for disposal and tags unauthorized items and assists customers along the route. Performs routine cleaning and preventive maintenance on equipment, including greasing joints and checking fluid levels.

Cleans and fuels equipment and vehicles. Inspects equipment daily and reports need for repairs and assists in repair work. Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with department projects, which may include a rear packer trash truck compactor controls, pick-up truck, rakes, pitch forks, shovels, and other hand tools utilized in routine work or maintenance.

Completes logs, reports, and forms as needed. Supplemental Functions: Occasional special event work, including set-up and breakdown of containers and waste collection. Work overtime and on holidays as needed.

Assist other Public Works Departments as needed, including snow removal or debris removal during weather events. Performs other similar duties as required Education and Experience About you: Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered: High school diploma or equivalency, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job (Required) Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes, and the routine operation of machines (Required) Specific License or Certification : Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license preferred. Other things to know: Work Schedule: This position generally works Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. (40 hours)

However, this position may also work Fridays, weekends, holidays, or during emergency situations or special events as needed. Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: Majority of work is performed outside with exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Frequent physical effort is required Able to repetitively lift heavy loads.

Knowledge: General knowledge of learned procedures, practices, and routines to deal effectively with routine work. Working knowledge of the functions and activities of assigned maintenance and/or construction crews. Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and the proper safety precautions involved in public works maintenance and construction activities.

Some knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in basic construction and maintenance operations, including grounds maintenance work. Skills & Abilities: Ability to use and care for a variety of hand tools. Ability to follow oral instructions.

Ability to learn and follow routine procedures. Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
