THE POSITION The ideal candidate for the position of Water Reclamation Plant Mechanic II will be an individual who can perform the installation and maintenance of pumps, motors, valves, piping/conduit, and other mechanical equipment at a journey level.
The candidate selected will work in the city's Water Reclamation Plant as well as several pump stations throughout the city. The ideal candidate should be able to utilize power and hand tools, electrical testing devices, welding and fabrication equipment, and the ability to work safely in an industrial environment. It is desirable for the candidate to have some experience with equipment at a wastewater treatment plant or similar industrial facility.
Under general supervision of the Water Reclamation Superintendent or designee, the Water Reclamation Plant Mechanic II performs a full range of skilled mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation work in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of process equipment and systems at the City's water reclamation facilities and pump stations. The position ensures continuous and efficient plant and pump station operation through preventive maintenance, diagnostic testing, and emergency response, and may assist in training and guiding lower-level staff. This is the journey-level classification in the Water Reclamation Plant Mechanic series.
Employees at this level performthe full scope of duties with minimal supervision and exercise independent judgment in the diagnosis and correction ofcomplex mechanical, electrical and instrumentation issues. This classification is distinguished from Water Reclamation Plant Mechanic I by its increased responsibility for complex diagnostics, independent decision-making, and leadership infield operations. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Please click on this link to see the entire classification description: Water Reclamation Plant Mechanic II EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES Education and Experience Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade (high school diploma or GED).
Two (2) years of experience performing skilled maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical/instrumentation systems in a water or wastewater treatment plant, manufacturing plant or other industrial facilities with similar equipment to the Water Reclamation Plant. Licenses and Certifications Grade II Mechanical Technologist Certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) required within two (2) years of date of hire. Grade I Electrical/Instrumentation Technologist Certificate issued by CWEA is highly desirable.
Valid California driver's license appropriate to the equipment operated. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: Principles, methods, tools, and equipment used in wastewater treatment plant maintenance and repair. Mechanical and electrical theory related to pumps, motors, compressors, generators, and valves.
Techniques for maintaining and troubleshooting VFDs, MCCs, and control systems. Calibration, programming, and maintenance of SCADA, PLCs, and process instrumentation. Piping installation and repair, including welding, threading, and fabrication methods.
Preventive and predictive maintenance scheduling and documentation using CMMS. Safe work practices related to electrical systems, confined-space entry, lockout/tagout, and hazardous materials. Occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.
Basic mathematics, algebra, and hydraulic calculations used in process maintenance. Pertinent federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and environmental compliance standards. Ability to: Perform a wide range of skilled mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation duties safely and efficiently.
Diagnoses, troubleshoot, and repair complex process equipment and systems. Interpret and work from technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics. Operate diagnostic instruments, hand and power tools, welding equipment, and heavy machinery.
Perform precise alignment, calibration, and electrical testing. Plan and complete work independently and meet critical maintenance deadlines. Maintain accurate logs, reports, and documentation.
Use modern computer applications including CMMS, spreadsheets, and SCADA interfaces. Respond effectively to emergency situations, including outside of normal working hours. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with City staff, contractors, and vendors. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT PHYSICAL DEMANDS Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office and a water reclamation plant setting; to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight; to operate assigned equipment and vehicles; to see in the normal visual range; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in an office and water reclamation plant environments with some travel to different field sites and locations; exposure to noise of plant machinery and other equipment, mechanical and electrical hazards, fumes and odors of sewage, chemicals, and gases, toxic substances such as chemicals, cleaners, solvents, and gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work with machinery; work in or around water and wastewater; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces, occasionally works in confined spaces or on ladders/scaffolding; incumbents are subject to 24-hour emergency callbacks and standby and are required to work varying hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays.
