What is an HVAC service technician?

HVAC service technicians are skilled professionals who install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Their responsibilities include diagnosing system malfunctions, performing routine maintenance checks, replacing or repairing defective equipment, and ensuring systems operate efficiently and safely. These technicians also advise customers on energy efficiency and proper system care. Most HVAC technicians are trained through a combination of technical education and hands-on apprenticeships.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an HVAC service technician?

To thrive as an HVAC Service Technician, you need a strong understanding of heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems, troubleshooting abilities, and typically an HVAC certification or technical diploma. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, refrigerant handling certifications (like EPA 608), and experience using digital controls are highly valued. Outstanding customer service, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help technicians interact with clients and resolve issues efficiently. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient system operation and building trust with customers.

What are common challenges faced by HVAC service technicians in the field?

HVAC Service Technicians often encounter challenges such as diagnosing complex system issues, working in tight or awkward spaces, and responding to emergency calls during off-hours or extreme weather conditions. Additionally, staying updated with evolving technology and compliance standards can be demanding. However, these challenges are balanced by a dynamic work environment, opportunities to develop specialized skills, and strong demand for skilled technicians, which supports career growth.

Job description

Overview HVAC Service Manager - Residential

Southlake, TX | DFW Metroplex Full-Time | Leadership Position

Compensation: $80-$95K/year + bonus plan

Know Residential HVAC? Know How to Lead People? We Want to Talk.

Berkeys Plumbing, A/C & Electrical is looking for an experienced HVAC Service Manager to lead our residential HVAC Service, Maintenance, and Recon teams.

This isn't a desk-only management role.

We're looking for a leader who knows residential HVAC from the field up-someone who understands what technicians face every day, can provide technical guidance when needed, knows how to coach performance, and can build a culture where great people want to stay and succeed.

If you've built your career in residential HVAC and progressed into a Service Manager, Field Supervisor, Service Supervisor, Lead Technician, or other HVAC leadership role, this could be your opportunity to take the next step with an established DFW home-services company.

The Leader We're Looking For

Great HVAC leadership takes more than being the best technician in the building.

We're looking for someone who can earn the respect of the field while also thinking like a business leader.

You know how to recognize great performance-and how to address it when expectations aren't being met. You're comfortable having difficult conversations, coaching different personalities, digging into the numbers, and making decisions that are right for the customer, the technician, and the business.

You don't just look at a KPI and ask what happened?

You want to understand why it happened and what you're going to do about it.

Most importantly, you genuinely enjoy developing people and building high-performing teams.

Why Berkeys?

Berkeys has been serving homeowners throughout DFW since 1975, and we're proud to have been recognized as a Top Workplace in 2023, 2024, and 2026.

We're an established home-services organization with the infrastructure and resources to support a high-performing HVAC operation-but our success still comes down to our people.

As an HVAC Service Manager, you'll have the opportunity to make a real impact on:

Your technicians. Your customers. Your department. And the business.

We offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

  • Medical, Dental & Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) with Company Match
  • Paid Time Off
  • Paid Holidays
  • Ongoing leadership and professional development
  • Employee recognition programs
  • Career advancement opportunities
  • A team culture centered around Trust, Care & Growth
Ready to Lead?

Maybe you're already managing a residential HVAC Service department and you're looking for your next opportunity.

Or maybe you're a successful HVAC Service Supervisor, Field Supervisor, or Lead Technician who's already coaching technicians, solving field problems, and helping drive performance-and you're ready to officially take the next step into management.

If you know residential HVAC, know how to lead people, and want ownership of a department's success, we'd like to meet you.

Apply today to join Berkeys Plumbing, A/C & Electrical as our next HVAC Service Manager.

Responsibilities What You'll Own

As our HVAC Service Manager, you'll be responsible for the people, performance, quality, and day-to-day success of the department.

You'll:

  • Lead, coach, develop, and hold accountable HVAC Service Technicians, Maintenance Technicians, and Recon team members
  • Oversee daily HVAC service operations, staffing, technician capacity, call coverage, and field productivity
  • Partner closely with Dispatch to ensure technicians are effectively matched to calls and capacity is maximized
  • Provide technical guidance on complex diagnostics, repairs, airflow, refrigerant systems, electrical components, controls, and overall system performance
  • Conduct ride-alongs, field observations, job audits, and quality inspections
  • Coach technicians on technical performance, productivity, customer communication, and ethical service recommendations
  • Monitor and improve revenue, gross margin, average ticket, productivity, conversion, callbacks, warranty rates, customer satisfaction, and technician performance
  • Resolve escalated customer concerns and ensure issues are handled professionally and appropriately
  • Recruit, onboard, train, coach, and develop HVAC talent
  • Manage labor, overtime, materials, inventory, tools, vehicles, and other department resources
  • Partner with Sales, Installation, Dispatch, Customer Service, Warehouse, Fleet, and other departments to keep operations running smoothly
  • Maintain high standards for safety, technical quality, code compliance, documentation, and customer experience
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, profitability, productivity, training, and overall department performance
Qualifications What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of residential HVAC experience in service, maintenance, installation, repair, or another technical HVAC capacity
  • Previous experience leading, supervising, or managing residential HVAC technicians strongly preferred
  • Strong residential HVAC technical knowledge and troubleshooting ability
  • Experience coaching technicians and managing individual and team performance
  • Strong understanding of residential service operations and field productivity
  • Ability to understand and manage operational and financial KPIs
  • Experience managing customer escalations and service-quality concerns
  • Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • EPA Section 608 Universal Certification
  • Current Texas TDLR ACR Technician Registration
  • Texas ACR Contractor License strongly preferred, but not required unless serving in the licensed capacity
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
  • ServiceTitan experience strongly preferred
