What is an HVAC intern?

HVAC interns are students or recent graduates who work alongside experienced HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) technicians or engineers to gain practical, hands-on experience in the field. They assist with tasks such as maintenance, installation, troubleshooting, and repairing HVAC systems, often under supervision. The internship is designed to help them learn industry practices, safety protocols, and technical skills necessary for a career in HVAC. Interns may also help with administrative tasks, documentation, and customer service. This experience prepares them for full-time roles in the HVAC industry after their education.

What types of projects and hands-on experiences can an HVAC intern expect during their internship?

As an HVAC Intern, you can expect to work alongside experienced technicians and engineers on a variety of projects, such as installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in commercial or residential settings. You'll likely assist with equipment inspections, ductwork, and reading blueprints, gaining exposure to both fieldwork and office-based tasks like documenting service reports. This hands-on experience not only helps you develop practical technical skills but also gives you insight into teamwork and collaboration with professionals from other trades, such as electricians and plumbers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HVAC intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HVAC Intern, you need a basic understanding of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning principles, often gained through vocational training or coursework in HVAC systems. Familiarity with tools like manifold gauges, refrigerant recovery machines, and diagnostic software is typically required, along with knowledge of safety protocols. Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and effective communication skills set outstanding interns apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and accurate support while developing expertise in the HVAC trade.

Job description

Commercial HVAC Service Technician

$35–$45/hr DOE | Full-Time | Denver Metro Area

AABLE HVAC is looking for an experienced Commercial HVAC Service Technician who can walk onto a jobsite, diagnose the problem, and get the customer back up and running.

Since 2005, we've built our business around commercial HVAC service, preventative maintenance, repairs, replacements, and long-term customer relationships throughout the Denver metro area. We're growing, and we're looking for technicians who want more than just a job — we want people who want to build their skills, their career, and their future with a growing company.

What You'll Be Doing

You'll work directly with commercial customers to keep their HVAC systems operating safely, efficiently, and reliably.

  • Perform preventative maintenance and service on RTUs, chillers, boilers, AHUs, cooling towers, VAVs, pumps, and HVAC controls
  • Troubleshoot electrical and mechanical issues and identify root causes
  • Complete repairs, replacements, and system adjustments with minimal customer disruption
  • Communicate findings and recommendations clearly with customers
  • Identify potential issues before they become expensive failures
  • Complete accurate service documentation and job notes
  • Maintain your company vehicle, tools, and equipment
  • Work safely and professionally at customer locations
  • As you grow, have opportunities to mentor junior technicians and take on additional responsibility

What We're Looking For

We're looking for a technician who can work independently and take ownership of the work in front of them.

Required:

  • 2+ years of commercial HVAC service experience
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
  • EPA Universal certification
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record
  • Apprenticeship completion or equivalent technical training
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to work on rooftops, ladders, and in mechanical rooms and lift 50+ lbs.

Preferred:

  • ICC certification
  • Experience with commercial controls/BAS
  • Chiller, boiler, or cooling tower experience
  • Strong customer communication skills

Why Technicians Choose AABLE

We're building a company where experienced technicians can grow instead of getting stuck in the same role year after year.

Competitive Pay: $35–$45/hr DOE, plus overtime opportunities

Career Growth: Paid training, certification support, and a clear path toward Lead Technician, Supervisor, and other leadership opportunities.

Build Wealth: Our Capital Incentive Plans provide performance-based rewards tied to company growth, giving employees an opportunity to participate in the upside they're helping create.

Tools & Resources: Company vehicle, gas card, phone/tool allowance, and the support you need to do your job well.

Ready for What's Next?

Apply today to join AABLE HVAC.
