Staff Software Engineer - Humanoid Controls

$225-300k base salary + equity

Austin, TX - Hybrid (relocation support available)


I’m partnered with a leading humanoid robotics company developing AI-powered robots for deployment in real-world environments. They’re looking for a Staff Humanoid Controls Software Engineer to join the Motion Control & Planning team and tackle the hardest problems in modern robotics.


This is a senior-level technical role with broad ownership across the controls stack. You’ll work across whole-body control, locomotion, mobile manipulation, dexterous control, teleoperation and reinforcement learning, translating state-of-the-art methods into robust capabilities running on physical humanoid robots.


What You’ll Work On

  • Advance whole-body control across both bipedal and wheeled-base robotic platforms, coordinating locomotion/base motion with upper-body manipulation.
  • Develop and improve WBC/OSC, QP and MPC-based controllers for complex floating-base systems
  • Combine model-based control and learning-based approaches, including RL-trained policies developed in simulation and transferred onto hardware
  • Tackle problems across dexterous/hand control, mobile manipulation, teleoperation and state estimation
  • Take algorithms from simulation to hardware bring-up and deployment, with measurable improvements to speed, payload, reliability and safety
  • Improve the underlying controls architecture, including real-time performance, testing, robustness and maintainability
  • Set technical direction across the controls stack and collaborate closely with locomotion, manipulation, RL, estimation, hardware and systems teams
  • Mentor other engineers and influence engineering standards across the broader robotics organization


What They’re Looking For

  • Deep expertise in robot kinematics, dynamics, state estimation, optimization and control theory
  • Significant experience with whole-body control for floating-base, legged or mobile robotic systems
  • Hands-on experience applying reinforcement learning/learning-based control to robotics.
  • Strong real-time C++ and Python software engineering experience
  • A track record of developing production-grade controllers and getting algorithms working reliably on physical robot hardware
  • MS/PhD in Robotics, CS, EE, ME or equivalent experience


Experience with dexterous manipulation, legged locomotion, production robotic fleets or safety-critical robotics is particularly valuable.


This is an opportunity to operate at Staff level on problems that sit directly at the intersection of modern control theory, reinforcement learning and humanoid robotics with the resources and mandate to turn advanced research into robots that operate at scale in the real world.
