What is a human service intern?

Human Service Interns are students or recent graduates who work under supervision in social service settings, such as community organizations, nonprofits, or government agencies. Their primary role is to gain practical experience by assisting professionals in helping individuals and families access resources, support, and care. Interns may engage in tasks like client intake, case management, program development, and outreach. This hands-on experience is often required for completing a degree in human services or related fields and helps prepare them for careers in social work, counseling, or advocacy.

What types of projects or tasks can a human service intern expect to be involved with during their internship?

As a Human Service Intern, you can expect to assist with a variety of tasks such as conducting client intake interviews, supporting case management activities, participating in community outreach, and helping organize workshops or group sessions. You may also have opportunities to shadow experienced professionals, attend staff meetings, and contribute to program development or evaluation. These experiences provide valuable exposure to direct client work and collaborative team environments, helping you build practical skills and a deeper understanding of the human services field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a human service intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Human Service Intern, a foundational understanding of social work principles, basic counseling techniques, and a related academic background are essential. Familiarity with case management software, documentation protocols, and confidentiality regulations like HIPAA is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and effective communication help interns build trust and rapport with clients and colleagues. These skills are crucial for providing meaningful support, maintaining ethical standards, and contributing positively to human service organizations.

We are currently looking for a "dynamic, results driven" individual to join as an HR Shared Services Intern at our Propulsion Technical Center (PTC), in Auburn Hills, MI.
This position will report to the HR Shared Services Manager and must be able to work 20-30 hours a week while enrolled as a full-time student. In this role, the HR Shared Services Intern will primarily support student recruitment and university relations activities for the Propulsion Technical Center (PTC) and World Headquarters (WHQ), while also contributing to process improvement, technology enablement, and employee experience initiatives. Key Responsibilities
  • Support student recruitment and university relations activities, including campus recruiting events, candidate communication, interview scheduling, pre-employment coordination, onboarding, and orientation for interns/co-ops.

  • Assist with planning and execution of student program initiatives, including intern/co-op engagement activities, program communications, and student experience support.

  • Coordinate with internal partners such as IT, Facilities, hiring managers, and HR team members to support a smooth student hiring and onboarding experience.

  • Provide first-level support to employees and students in a timely, professional, and customer-focused manner.

  • Assist with HR reporting, data entry, records maintenance, personnel file updates, and audit activities to support accuracy and compliance.

  • Support HR projects, process improvement efforts, benchmarking, and internal communications as assigned.

  • Identify opportunities to improve HR Shared Services and student program processes by simplifying workflows, reducing manual effort, and enhancing the employee, candidate, and student experience.

  • Explore and recommend ways to leverage technology, automation, reporting tools, and digital communication platforms to improve recruitment coordination, onboarding, program administration, and HR service delivery.

  • Perform other related responsibilities as assigned or required.

What We Are Looking For
  • Undergraduate or graduate full-time student attending an accredited college or university, preferably pursuing a degree in Human Resources, Business, Communications, Psychology, or a related field.

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA preferred.

  • Interest in human resources, talent acquisition, university relations, student programs, employee experience, or process improvement.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with candidates, students, employees, managers, and HR partners.

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Customer-service mindset with strong follow-up, problem-solving, collaboration, and ownership skills.

  • Curious and comfortable exploring ways to improve processes, leverage technology, and simplify work.

  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint; experience with tools such as Canva, DocuSign, automation tools, reporting platforms, or similar technology is a plus.

  • Ability to work 20-30 hours per week during the school year and 30-40 hours per week during summer months.

  • Ability to report onsite at least three days per week.
