HR Generalist
Location: Reston or Sterling, VA
Reports To: Director of Human Resources
Position Type: Full-Time, In-Office
About the Role
Vertical Mechanical Group (VMG) is looking for an HR Generalist to join our growing Human Resources team. This position will report directly to the Director of HR and work closely with our HR Coordinator to provide day-to-day HR support to employees and leaders across the organization.
We are looking for someone who enjoys being a resource to both employees and managers, is comfortable working through day-to-day employee questions and challenges, and can help keep HR processes moving in a fast-paced environment.
This is a hands-on opportunity for an HR professional who wants broad exposure to employee relations, HR operations, compliance, benefits, leave administration, and the many different situations that come with supporting a growing workforce.
What You'll Do
  • Serve as a day-to-day HR resource for employees and managers, providing guidance on policies, procedures, and general HR questions.
  • Partner with managers to address employee concerns, performance matters, attendance, and other workplace issues.
  • Support employee relations matters and workplace investigations, including gathering information and maintaining appropriate documentation.
  • Assist with corrective actions, employee transitions, and offboarding when needed.
  • Support leave administration, including FMLA and other employee leave requests.
  • Work collaboratively with the HR Coordinator to support onboarding, employee changes, benefits, HRIS administration, personnel records, and other HR processes.
  • Help ensure HR policies and practices are applied consistently across the organization.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential employee records and documentation.
  • Partner with the Director of HR on employee relations matters, compliance initiatives, HR projects, and other departmental priorities.
  • Build strong working relationships with employees and leaders across both field and office operations.
What We're Looking For
  • 2-4 years of Human Resources experience.
  • Previous HR experience in construction, mechanical contracting, skilled trades, or another field-based environment is preferred.
  • Experience supporting employee relations and general HR operations.
  • Working knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with professionalism and good judgment.
  • Comfortable working independently while also being part of a collaborative HR team.
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.
Work Location
This is an in-office position based in either our Reston or Sterling, Virginia office, with occasional travel to other company locations and project sites throughout the DMV area as needed.
