What is an HR intern?

HR interns are entry-level professionals who support the human resources department by assisting with tasks such as recruitment, onboarding, employee records management, and organizing company events. They gain practical experience in HR processes and policies, often working under the supervision of experienced HR staff. The internship helps them learn about workplace culture, labor laws, and human resources best practices, preparing them for a potential future career in HR.

What are the typical responsibilities of an HR intern?

HR interns are often entrusted with a variety of hands-on tasks that provide insight into the full spectrum of human resources functions. Common responsibilities include assisting with recruitment processes like screening resumes and scheduling interviews, helping organize onboarding activities for new hires, supporting employee engagement initiatives, and maintaining HR records and databases. Interns may also have opportunities to participate in HR policy updates, payroll support, or coordinating training sessions. This exposure allows interns to develop practical HR skills while collaborating closely with experienced HR professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HR intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HR Intern, you generally need a foundational understanding of human resources principles, strong organizational skills, and enrollment in or completion of a relevant degree program. Familiarity with HR information systems (HRIS), Microsoft Office Suite, and basic payroll or recruitment platforms is often expected. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and discretion in handling sensitive information are essential soft skills. These abilities ensure effective support for HR functions, accuracy in handling confidential data, and the ability to contribute positively to team dynamics.

Job description

Paychex is reimagining how businesses manage their workforce by bringing payroll, HR, benefits, and advisory services together into a single connected HCM platform. As Paychex and Paycor come together, we're combining innovative technology, data-driven insights, AI, and human expertise to help organizations work smarter, support their people, and achieve better business outcomes. This is an exciting time to join our team as we continue to invest in innovation, simplify client experiences, and shape the future of work. At Paychex, you'll have the opportunity to grow your career, make a meaningful impact, and be part of something bigger as One Paychex.

Overview

Advise with credibility. Win with impact.

PEO Sales is where expertise turns into enterprise-level impact. You’ll partner with businesses navigating complexity—helping them operate more effectively through a fully bundled HR, benefits, compliance, and risk management solution.

This is not transactional selling—it’s strategic. You’ll operate as a trusted advisor, leading high-value conversations with executives and solving complex workforce challenges through a co-employment model that delivers enterprise-level capabilities without the overhead.

Every conversation shapes a business. Every deal drives long-term value. Every win builds a career at the highest level of sales.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

  • Drive new business through prospecting, relationship development, and your professional network
  • Sell a full PEO solution including HR, payroll, benefits, compliance, and risk management
  • Lead consultative, multi-stakeholder conversations with business owners and executive buyers (C-suite, CFO, HR leaders)
  • Manage a strategic sales process with high-value deals and deep discovery
  • Build and leverage referral networks and strategic partnerships
  • Own the full sales cycle—from prospecting and discovery to solution design and close

What It Takes to Win

  • Professional sales experience in PEO, HCM, BPO, staffing, or adjacent industries (SaaS, insurance, financial services)
  • Proven ability to sell in a consultative, relationship-driven environment with complex deals
  • Experience engaging executive-level buyers and navigating multi-stakeholder decisions
  • Strong network and ability to generate business through referrals and relationships
  • Trusted advisor mindset with credibility in risk, compliance, and workforce conversations
  • High ownership, accountability, and drive to win in a competitive, high-value environment

PEO or HCM experience is a plus, not required.

Why This Role

  • Uncapped earning potential with high-value deal sizes
  • Opportunity to operate as a strategic advisor—not just a seller
  • Access to a differentiated, fully bundled solution with strong market demand
  • Work with businesses where your expertise directly impacts outcomes
  • Clear path to advance within a high-performance sales organization

If you’re a network-driven seller ready to operate at a higher level, this is where you lead, influence, and win.
