About the Job
Hepatobiliary surgeon
Location: Baltimore Region, MedStar Health System
MedStar Health is seeking an experienced, visionary and accomplished Attending Physician/HPB Surgeon. This leadership role offers a unique opportunity to advance multidisciplinary care, research, and education in pancreatic and hepatobiliary (HPB) surgery while shaping the future of pancreatic disease treatment across the Baltimore region. Medstar operates four hospitals in the Baltimore region with a focused Center for Digestive Diseases and Cancer Center located at the flagship institution. An ACGME training program in general surgery is acritical component of the teaching platform. The center is affiliated with the Medstar Georgetown Cancer Network and Medstar Georgetown Transplant Institute.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Program Leadership: Oversee and grow a program of HPB surgery and disease management providing services across MedStar Health institutions in the Baltimore region.
  • Clinical Excellence: Perform pancreatic and HPB surgery while leading efforts to expand and enhance the HPB surgical program.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Partner with colleagues in advanced gastroenterology, oncology, radiology, and other specialties to develop innovative approaches to the treatment of pancreatic cancer.
  • Education and Training: Lead teaching efforts for fellows, residents, and students, with the goal of establishing a formal HPB curriculum.
  • Research Development: Drive clinical trials and investigator-initiated research studies aimed at advancing treatment options for HPB disease patients.
  • Quality Assurance: Develop and implement a comprehensive quality assurance and performance improvement program to ensure surgical excellence across the system.
  • Strategic Growth: Collaborate with department leadership to establish goals for program growth, define metrics of success, and align efforts with institutional priorities and cancer center initiatives.
  • Administrative Leadership: Support hospital and regulatory compliance tasks, as needed, in coordination with the Chairman of the MedStar Integrated Surgical Services.
  • Patient-Centered Care: Engage in initiatives to improve the patient experience and ensure optimal outcomes for those receiving pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery.

Ideal Candidate Profile:
  • Training background in either an AHPBA, SSO or ASTS approved fellowship is acceptable. A strong track record of clinical excellence and independence in pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery.
  • Proven experience in building and leading interdisciplinary teams in a healthcare system or academic setting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing research, teaching, and quality improvement in HPB surgery.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and collaborative skills to foster partnerships with various clinical and administrative stakeholders.
  • A visionary mindset to drive innovation and growth in a high-performing healthcare environment.

  • Graduated from an accredited fellowship program.
