What does a Computer Science Intern do?

A Computer Science Intern supports software development teams by assisting with coding, testing, debugging, and documentation tasks. Interns often work on real-world projects under the guidance of experienced engineers, gaining hands-on experience with programming languages, development tools, and collaborative workflows. The role helps students apply classroom knowledge in a professional setting, build their technical skills, and understand workplace dynamics in the tech industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Science Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Science Intern, you need foundational knowledge in programming, algorithms, and data structures, typically gained through coursework or related projects in a computer science degree program. Familiarity with coding languages like Python, Java, or C++, and experience with version control systems such as Git are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and effective communication set outstanding interns apart. These abilities enable interns to contribute to real-world projects, adapt quickly, and collaborate successfully within technical teams.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as a Computer Science Intern?

As a Computer Science Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects that may include software development, debugging, testing, or assisting with database management. Interns often collaborate closely with full-time engineers and participate in code reviews, team meetings, and occasionally client interactions. The work environment is usually collaborative, providing opportunities to learn from experienced mentors and gain exposure to real-world development cycles. These experiences are designed to help you build technical skills and prepare for future roles in the industry.

Location: Knoxville, TN | Full-Time, Summer 2026
Company: SkyNano LLC
About SkyNano
SkyNano is a fast-growing startup transforming carbon emissions into value. We've developed and patented an electrochemical process to convert CO₂ into high-performance carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and battery-grade graphite, unlocking new possibilities for advanced materials while solving urgent industrial challenges. As we scale our technology from pilot to commercial manufacturing, we are building a world-class team of engineers, scientists, and builders motivated by deep technical challenges and real-world impact.
At SkyNano, you'll find a mission-driven culture that values creativity, rigorous engineering, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and continuous learning. Your work will directly contribute to scaling a first-of-a-kind, high-temperature electrochemical manufacturing platform.
