Hourly Worker information

What is an hourly worker?

Hourly workers are employees who are paid based on the number of hours they work, rather than receiving a fixed annual salary. Their wages are calculated by multiplying their hourly rate by the total hours worked in a pay period. Hourly workers often qualify for overtime pay if they work more than 40 hours a week, depending on local labor laws. This type of employment is common in industries like retail, hospitality, and manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an hourly worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Hourly Worker, you generally need a strong work ethic, reliability, and basic math or literacy skills, with a high school diploma often preferred but not always required. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, cash registers, or industry-specific tools may be necessary depending on the job. Punctuality, adaptability, and effective communication are important soft skills that help you succeed and stand out. These abilities ensure efficient daily operations, positive interactions with customers and coworkers, and consistent job performance in a variety of settings.

What are some common challenges faced by hourly workers, and how can they be addressed?

Hourly workers often encounter challenges such as fluctuating schedules, limited access to benefits, and variable income. To address these, it's helpful to communicate openly with supervisors about scheduling preferences and availability. Many employers are now adopting more predictable scheduling practices and offering flexible shift options. Additionally, seeking out positions with employers who provide benefits to part-time or hourly staff can improve job satisfaction and stability. Building strong relationships with team members can also create a supportive work environment, making it easier to navigate daily challenges.

What is the difference between Hourly Worker vs Part-Time Employee?

AspectHourly WorkerPart-Time Employee
Work HoursTypically variable, paid per hourSet fewer hours per week, often regular schedule
Employment StatusUsually considered temporary or casualUsually considered part of the regular workforce
CredentialsMinimal or no specific credentials requiredMay require specific skills or certifications
Work EnvironmentVaries widely, often in retail, hospitality, or manual laborSimilar environments, often retail, service, or administrative

While both Hourly Workers and Part-Time Employees are paid based on hours worked, Hourly Workers often have more flexible or irregular schedules and may lack formal employment benefits. Part-Time Employees typically have a consistent schedule and may receive some benefits depending on the employer. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find roles that match their availability and employment preferences.

We are looking for a skilled Workday Specialist to serve as the on-site technical lead for a critical Workday implementation at our Warsaw Manufacturing Facility. In this role, you will partner with our Workday Consultants to drive all configuration, testing, and go-live activities across Time Tracking, Absence, and Scheduling.

This role sits at the center of two high-impact initiatives: transitioning hourly workers from biweekly to weekly payroll and deploying Workday Time, Absence, and Scheduling across a workforce of up to 2,000 employees. You will collaborate closely with stakeholders across Manufacturing, Finance, Payroll, and our external Workday consulting team.

| WORK AUTHORIZATION REQUIREMENT

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship at this time.

| WHAT YOU GET TO DO

Time Tracking & Absence Management

  • Review Time Tracking and Absence configuration to scope testing scenarios and identify impacted calculations.
  • Partner with our Workday implementation consultants to review and validate a new pay period schedule and align a corresponding Pay Group to support the transition to a weekly payroll frequency for hourly employees.
  • Review and test new Workweek definitions and review all Overtime rule calculations.
  • Review and modify Time Entry Templates, Time Codes, and Calculation Rules to reflect the updated pay structure.
  • Adjust Time Off Plans and accrual logic to align with the new weekly pay frequency.
  • Collaborate with the external time clock vendor to ensure accurate time collection and integration data flow.
  • Support Time and Absence-specific testing scenarios and participate in End-to-End testing.
  • Execute go-live configuration and data conversion activities in the Production environment and provide post-launch support.

Scheduling

  • Support Workday Scheduling configuration for up to 2,000 hourly workers.
  • Configure up to 3 Schedule Tag Types in support of the deployment scope.
  • Implement static scheduling via Work Schedule Calendars (Static Scheduling methodology).
  • Support a re-organization of the Supervisory Organization Hierarchy as it pertains to scheduling impacts; coordinate with HCM/Data Conversion workstreams for related data conversion activities.
  • Set up the 10 delivered Workday Scheduling reports and configure the Workforce Management Operational Reporting security package.

Payroll

  • Audit Earnings and Deductions to scope testing scenarios and identify calculations impacted by the shift from biweekly to weekly pay for hourly workers.
  • Test new Period Schedule and Pay Group to support weekly payroll processing for the hourly population.
  • Review and test Run Categories to the new Period Schedule and Pay Group.
  • Assist with assigning workers to the new Pay Groups.
  • Review smoke-testing results to validate payroll configuration prior to formal testing phases.
  • Support payroll-specific and End-to-End testing scenarios.
  • Support go-live payroll configuration and data conversion in the Production environment and provide post-launch support.

Benefits

  • Assist with auditing benefits configuration (benefit groups, benefit plans, and election data) to confirm impacts resulting from the introduction of weekly pay for hourly workers.
  • Review and test new Benefit Group(s) as required to support the updated pay frequency.
  • Assist with and test 401(k) elections and conversion to weekly amounts for the affected hourly population.
  • Conduct smoke-testing of benefits configuration.
  • Support Benefits-specific and End-to-End testing scenarios.
  • Support go-live benefits configuration and data conversion in production and provide post-launch support.

Integrations

  • Serve as the primary Workday technical point of contact for two integrations with an external time clock vendor.
  • Coordinate with the external time clock vendor, internal integration teams, and external Workday consultant to validate data flows during testing and at go-live.

General & Cross-Functional

  • Serve as the primary on-site Workday technical liaison for the Warsaw Manufacturing Facility throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Partner with external Workday consultants, HR Operations, Payroll, and Manufacturing team to translate business requirements into Workday configuration.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of all configuration decisions, testing outcomes, and go-live activities.
  • Proactively identify risks and escalate issues to the Director, HR Operations.

| WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TEAM

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, Information Technology, or a related discipline preferred.
  • Minimum 5+ years of hands-on Workday configuration experience, with demonstrated expertise in Time Tracking & Absence, Payroll, and Scheduling workstreams.
  • Previous experience supporting a manufacturing or industrial hourly workforce in Workday.
  • Direct experience supporting a pay frequency change (e.g., biweekly to weekly) within the Workday platform.
  • Direct experience configuring Period Schedules, Pay Groups, Run Categories, Time Entry Templates, Time Codes, Overtime Rules, and Accrual Plans.
  • Experience with Workday Scheduling, including Schedule Tag Types and static scheduling.
  • Familiarity with Workday Benefits configuration, including Benefit Groups and 401(k) election data conversion.
  • Experience supporting or executing go-live activities including smoke-testing, End-to-End testing, production data conversion, and post-go-live support.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to partner effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work on-site at the Warsaw, Indiana manufacturing facility.
