Outside Plant Underground Laborer Job Description

Visionary Broadband seeks a qualified individual to fulfill the role of Outside Plant (OSP) Construction Laborer and work with Visionary’s underground fiber optic construction team. This full-time, hourly position will join the Fiber team at Visionary Broadband, a division of Visionary Communications, Inc., one of the top service providers in the region. The position will be based out of Casper Wyoming, with anticipated travel in the surrounding region. This position will report to the Underground Foreman and will spend time also working with regional construction managers in Colorado, Wyoming, and future territories as Visionary expands.

Job Overview:

The Laborer will work closely with the rest of the crew, reporting to the Foreman, travelling throughout Visionary territories building and maintaining fiber optic plant. They will perform construction on fiber projects with underground elements including but not limited to trenching, boring, drop(s), placing and maintaining handholes, pedestals, and plant maintenance on an existing and expanding network.

A successful candidate may have experience with underground fiber placing specifications and concepts, an understanding of general industry best practices, and a willingness to travel and learn. Visionary is a service provider in varied terrains and with many different types of plant including underground and aerial, as well as fiber to the premise.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools, clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, erecting scaffolding, cleaning up rubble and debris, and removing waste material
  • Dig trenches, backfill excavations, or compacting earth to grade specifications, using shovels and machinery
  • Perform a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor in road/highway environments to prepare worksite for telecommunications cabling
  • Locate underground utilities and eliminate potential hazards for cabling work to be completed
  • Conduct traffic control near, in, or around work zones
  • Perform material handling and storage tasks
  • Follow project plans laid out by Visionary Engineering and Construction Management
  • Accurately perform underground work in accordance with State, County, City, and Visionary standards.
  • As the job requires, operate all requisite machinery safely to ensure the job is completed
  • Maintain a safe working environment
  • In partnership with Visionary’s fleet management team and supervisory staff, oversee vehicle and machine maintenance

Qualifications:

A qualified candidate must possess the following skills, or have equivalent experience and/or qualifications:

  • Experience with any heavy machinery such as a forklift, excavator, hydro-vac, or similar is a plus
  • A valid driver’s license and eligibility to obtain a CDL
  • Ability to safely drive with a trailer
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to pass a drug test and background screen
  • Flexibility to work outside of standard 8am-5pm hours and be willing to travel throughout a large service territory 50-70% of the time.
  • Must be able to lift/push/pull/carry up to 75 pounds
  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions (hot, cold, wet, dry, windy)
  • Must be able to work in a loud, noise filled environment
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with demonstrated problem solving abilities

Physical Requirements:

90%+ / - of the time will be spent walking and standing in the field or utilizing construction machinery with various weather conditions.

Visual and audio acuity is essential to this position.
