What is an hourly physician?

Hourly physicians are medical doctors who are compensated based on the number of hours they work, rather than receiving a fixed annual salary or being paid per patient. They may work in hospitals, clinics, urgent care centers, or telemedicine, often covering shifts or providing temporary coverage. This flexible arrangement is popular among physicians seeking work-life balance or supplemental income, and it allows healthcare facilities to address staffing needs efficiently.

How does working as an hourly physician differ from a traditional salaried physician in terms of daily workflow and team interaction?

As an hourly physician, your daily workflow often involves more flexibility in scheduling and may include shifts at multiple facilities or clinics. Compared to salaried roles, you might have less administrative responsibility and more focus on direct patient care during your shifts. Team interaction can vary, as you may work with different healthcare teams depending on your assignment, requiring strong communication and adaptability. This structure appeals to those seeking greater control over their work-life balance and exposure to diverse clinical environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an hourly physician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Hourly Physician, you need a valid medical degree, board certification, and active state licensure, along with solid diagnostic and clinical decision-making skills. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), telemedicine platforms, and common clinical software is typically required. Strong interpersonal communication, adaptability, and the ability to work efficiently in diverse and sometimes fast-paced environments are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure safe, high-quality patient care and enable flexibility across various healthcare settings, which is essential for hourly or locum tenens roles.
