Primary Purpose
The Captioner is responsible, under the direction of Student Accessibility Services management, provides post-production captioning services for students with auditory processing disabilities in lecture and lab classes, exams, discussions and related activities, both online and on campus. The captioner accepts responsibility for knowledge of and adherence to the ethics of transcribing and the role of the educational transcriber.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide post-production captioning services for students with auditory processing disabilities in lecture and lab classes, exams, discussions and related activities, both online and on campus.
  • Prepare for classes by reading and becoming familiar with technical vocabulary and content.
  • Establish and maintain a good working relationship with students, staff and/or off-site agencies as may be required by the assignment.
  • Stay abreast of new developments and techniques in the speech-to-text services.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose basic problems with computer equipment. Perform minor maintenance and repair on equipment as necessary.

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing), using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.
  • Advanced skills in the use of captioning/transcribing software.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse set of individuals and groups representing a variety of backgrounds.
  • Ability to plan and work successfully with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work with a diverse clientele.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to provide own transportation to and from campuses and/or off-site locations may be required.

Ergonomic Requirements
Regular office hours are established between 8 am - 5 pm during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities.
Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to work at a workstation for extended periods. Requires to write, read written materials and computer screens, and ability to use telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25lbs. All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Minimum Requirements

Level 1 - Novice
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Six month's experience of classroom transcribing and/or captioning experience at the post-secondary level.
Level 2
Education: Associate's degree or equivalent.
Experience: 5 years' experience of classroom transcribing and/or captioning experience at the post-secondary level.
Level 3
Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
Experience: 2 years' experience of classroom transcribing and/or captioning experience at the post-secondary level.
