Assistant Chief Engineer 

JOB DESCRIPTION 

DEPARTMENT: Engineering 

REPORTS TO:   Chief Engineer 

STATUS: Exempt 

SALARY RANGE: $60K - $80k per year

JOB SUMMARY 

The Chief Engineer leads and manages all engineering operations to protect the hotel asset, including the physical building structure and all mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems. This role is responsible for budgeting, capital projects, preventive maintenance, and compliance with regulatory requirements. The Chief Engineer ensures guest areas are well-maintained, oversees engineering staff, and drives improvements in guest satisfaction and operational efficiency. 

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS 

Education & Experience:   

  • Associate degree or equivalent technical training in engineering or related field; bachelor’s degree preferred. 

  • 4–6 years of experience in building maintenance or engineering, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role. 

  • Hotel or hospitality experience preferred. 

  • Must meet applicable state and federal certification and/or licensing requirements (including HVAC). 

Physical Requirements:  

  • Ability to move, lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 lbs without assistance; assist with objects over 100 lbs. 

  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and service ramps. 

  • Frequent bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping. 

  • Ability to work in physically demanding environments and adapt to varying conditions.

  • Must be able to bend, stoop, and reach during inspections and cleaning tasks. 

 

General Requirements  

  • Strong knowledge of building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and life safety. 

  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics. 

  • Skilled in preventive maintenance planning and execution. 

  • Strong leadership and communication skills to supervise and train engineering staff. 

  • Proficient in engineering computer programs related to preventive maintenance and energy management. 

  • Commitment to safety protocols and regulatory compliance. 

DUTIES & FUNCTIONS 

Fundamental Requirements: 

  • Assist the Chief Engineer in daily operations of the engineering department. 

  • Supervise and guide engineering staff; provide training and mentorship. 

  • Coordinate and monitor preventive maintenance programs for all building systems. 

  • Respond promptly to guest and operational repair requests. 

  • Inspect and evaluate the physical condition of facilities; recommend repairs and improvements. 

  • Maintain accurate logs and records of maintenance activities. 

  • Support budget management by monitoring expenses and recommending cost-saving measures. 

  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and company policies. 

  • Operate and maintain building automation systems and related technology. 

  • Assist in planning and executing capital projects and renovations. 

  • Monitor inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies; assist with ordering and procurement. 

  • Conduct daily rounds and readings of critical systems (HVAC, boilers, pumps). 

  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems as needed. 

  • Serve as acting Chief Engineer in their absence, ensuring continuity of operations. 

  • Participate in hiring, scheduling, and performance evaluations of engineering staff. 

  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support hotel operations.
