Job description

Do you take pride in creating clean, organized, and safe environments?
Heritage Pet Hospital is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented Veterinary Hospital Custodian to join our team in our brand-new 6,000-square-foot veterinary hospital. This position is critical to maintaining the cleanliness, safety, appearance, and infection-control standards of our facility.
This is NOT an animal care position. While you will work within a veterinary hospital environment, this role does not involve patient care, animal handling, restraint, walking pets, or assisting medical staff with animals. We are specifically seeking someone who enjoys cleaning, organizing, maintaining facilities, and working independently.
Position Summary
The Veterinary Hospital Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, sanitary, safe, and professional hospital environment for our patients, clients, and team members. This position requires a self-starter who can identify tasks that need to be completed without constant direction and who takes pride in attention to detail.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Hospital Cleaning & Sanitation
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and maintain all hospital floors.
  • Dust and clean exam rooms, treatment areas, offices, break rooms, reception areas, hallways, and restrooms.
  • Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces throughout the hospital.
  • Maintain cleanliness of doors, windows, walls, cabinets, counters, and furniture.
  • Empty trash, recycling, and medical waste containers throughout the facility.
  • Clean and sanitize public areas and employee workspaces.
  • Refill paper products, hand sanitizer stations, soaps, and other supplies as needed.
Surgical & Medical Area Support
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of surgery suites and treatment areas.
  • Follow strict cleaning and disinfection protocols to support infection control.
  • Clean and disinfect surgical and treatment spaces according to hospital standards.
  • Assist with maintaining a sterile environment within designated medical areas.
  • Support the medical team by ensuring cleaning supplies and sanitation products are stocked and available.
Kennel & Laundry Responsibilities
  • Clean and sanitize kennels, cages, and holding areas when vacant.
  • Wash, dry, fold, and organize hospital laundry, including towels, blankets, and bedding.
  • Maintain laundry equipment and report any concerns.
Facility Maintenance & Groundskeeping
  • Maintain exterior grounds including sidewalks, entrances, parking lot, and landscaped areas.
  • Pick up litter and debris from the property.
  • Assist with seasonal maintenance tasks such as snow removal, salting, or outdoor cleanup.
  • Replace light bulbs and perform minor maintenance tasks as appropriate.
  • Identify and report facility maintenance concerns promptly.
  • Assist with organization and storage throughout the building.
Inventory & Stocking
  • Monitor cleaning supply inventory and notify management when reordering is needed.
  • Stock hospital supplies in designated areas.
  • Keep storage areas clean, organized, and accessible.
Qualifications
  • Previous janitorial, custodial, housekeeping, environmental services, or facility maintenance experience preferred.
  • Healthcare, veterinary, medical, dental, or surgical facility cleaning experience is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changing needs throughout the day.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to help wherever needed.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and lift throughout an entire shift.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to safely operate cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • Comfortable working around cleaning chemicals and disinfectants.
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
What Success Looks Like
The ideal candidate notices what needs to be done before being asked. They take ownership of the appearance of the hospital, maintain exceptionally high cleaning standards, and understand that cleanliness plays a critical role in patient safety, infection control, and client experience.
If you are someone who finds satisfaction in creating order, maintaining high standards, and keeping a facility looking its absolute best, we'd love to hear from you.
