This hospital has grown in size and capabilities over the decades to become a Level II trauma center, serving the community since 1965. It also serves as the base teaching hospital for Michigan State University.
About Trenton Hospital
This Magnet®-designated facility provides comprehensive medical and surgical care for its patients and is one of four recipients of the Truven Health Advantage Award in the category of Health and Clinical Outcomes. It is home to nine university affiliated residency programs. Here, you will find a Level II trauma center that is a nationally recognized heart, vascular and pulmonary specialties along with other specialties like orthopedics, neurosurgery, and women's health.
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is the senior physician executive responsible for promoting excellence in clinical care, research, and education at the hospital. In collaboration with the regional CMO and other medical and hospital leaders, the hospital CMO will create the vision and strategic plan for hospital clinical activities. The hospital CMO will serve as an advocate for the hospital and promote consistently high standards for performance in clinical care, education, research, financial and operational performance in keeping with Corewell Health's mission, vision and values.
The CMO is the highest hospital physician clinical authority working in a dyad relationship with the hospital Chief Nursing Officer. The CMO will lead physician and Advanced Practice Provider (APP) engagement and alignment, operational improvements, participate in CARTS alignment as necessary, determine best practice models for care delivery, and collaborate to lead all aspects of provider wellbeing, data, quality outcomes, credentialing/privileging, including promoting professionalism and behaviors consistent with Corewell Health's values.
Essential Functions
Quality and Patient Safety
  • Accountable to ensure the highest standards for patient safety and clinical quality.
  • Responsible to monitor, expand and improve outpatient and inpatient clinical care and service across at the hospital.
  • Partner with the Medial Director of Quality, where that position exists, to develop and implement an annual quality and patient safety plan, including a plan for monitoring key quality and safety bench marked indicators for the hospital.
  • Assure that regular evaluations are performed on each Medical Staff Member based on the OPPE (Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation) and FPPE (Focused Professional Practice Evaluation) criteria set forth by the General Medical Staff and recommend and follow-up on appropriate action.
  • Responsible for performance in metrics as assigned by system Chief Quality Officer, in partnership with regional CMO.
  • In conjunction with the other hospital physician leaders, evaluate and take appropriate action on medical staff members as incidences arise.
  • Review, trend and report safety events. Implement action steps to prevent future events.
  • Ensure Hospital compliance with Joint Commission and other federal and state regulatory and compliance agencies.
  • Participate in hospital and health system Quality and Safety meetings as requested.

Service
  • Development and implementation of strategies to facilitate the delivery of care and service excellence for patients, physicians, and staff.
  • Jointly, with other hospital physician leaders, review available physician satisfaction data and monthly patient satisfaction data (HCAHPS) and discuss the action plans for improvement.
  • Lead hospital initiatives to improve the operational processes that impact patients and clinicians at the hospital.
  • Jointly with administrative leadership, develop, implement, monitor and report annual operational performance goals for the hospital.
  • Assists in physician network development and physician recruitment programs and develops and maintains a program to attract and retain physicians in the communities served.
  • May assist with negotiation and management of short-term coverage arrangements (locum tenens).
  • Establishes and implements policies and standards, evaluates new treatments, and conducts medical research (where applicable) to ensure quality of clinical care provided to patients.

Financial Performance
  • Responsible to promote system-wide performance standards for clinical services to optimize financial and operational performance. In collaboration with the hospital President, regional CMO and other regional leaders, be accountable for overall financial performance of the hospital.
  • In conjunction with the hospital President, develop an annual operating and capital budget for the hospital.
  • Support the Value Analysis Team program and other supply chain initiatives.
  • Jointly with the administrative leadership, develop, implement, monitor and report annual financial goals for the hospital. Create and implement action plans for improvement when appropriate.
  • Develop and support clinical programs which promote hospital financial stewardship and sustainability.

People
  • Responsible to recruit and retain superior and diverse clinical staff and foster a positive work environment.
  • Implement and enforce the Bylaws and Rules & Regulations of the hospital and of the Medical Staff.
  • In conjunction with the market President evaluate physician leaders at the hospital based upon annually agreed upon goals.
  • In conjunction with hospital and system leaders, recruit and implement programs for growth and retention of Medical Staff members based on the programmatic needs of the market and community.
  • In conjunction with the administrative leadership, recruit support personnel necessary to support programmatic growth and patient/physician/employee satisfaction.
  • Maintains physician relations and provides support services to physicians. Mediates issues between individual physicians and Medical Staff or Administrative departments. Maintains professional relationships with physicians, the executive team, and internal / external communities.

Growth
  • Responsible to promote growth in clinical services at the hospital through the development of integrated clinical programs.
  • In conjunction with system leadership, review annual market share and competitive analyses for each market.
  • In collaboration with the Regional CMO as well as other system leaders, develop annual strategic objectives and business plans identifying areas for programmatic growth at the system or local hospital level. Implement such programs which are approved.
  • Support strategies for system-wide clinical integration and clinical effectiveness in collaboration with corporate and divisional leadership.
  • Facilitate and participate in fund development activities in the organization and delivery of clinical services, the generation of gifts and endowments, the creation and licensing of intellectual property and the negotiation of contracts for clinical research and other services.

Academic Mission
  • Responsible to support and develop an integrated strategy for undergraduate and graduate medical education consistent with the priorities and standards endorsed by the regional CMO.
  • Encourage, participate, and support CME for medical staff.
  • Support academic and scholarly pursuits such as papers, research, and presentations that promote the academic mission.
  • Mentor and develop faculty and promote excellence in teaching and scholarly activity.

Annual Report
  • On an annual basis, the Chief Medical Officer will submit a report of activities, outcomes and assessment of progress in the domains of quality and safety, service, financial performance, people, and growth as a part of his/her performance assessment.

Qualifications
  • Doctorate Graduate of approved Medical College. Required
  • Licensure and board certification, as required by the hospital's medical staff bylaws
  • 5 years of relevant experience in operations and financial management and leadership in a hospital, academic healthcare center, or academic group practice. Required
  • Experience in medical staff functions. Working knowledge of hospital operations, quality improvement, and strategic planning. Required
  • Additional training in management or administration. Preferred
  • Physician (MD) - State of Michigan required Or
  • Osteopathic Physician (DO) - State of Michigan required Or
  • Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) - State of Michigan State of Michigan required Or
  • Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) - State of Michigan State of Michigan required Or
