Homeschool Assistant information

What is a homeschool assistant?

Homeschool Assistants are individuals who support families in managing and delivering home-based education. They help with lesson planning, organizing educational activities, tutoring students, and sometimes tracking academic progress. Their role can vary depending on the family's needs, but typically involves assisting parents with administrative tasks, curriculum implementation, and providing additional learning support to students. Homeschool Assistants may work in-person or virtually and can be a valuable resource for families seeking personalized educational help.

How does a homeschool assistant typically collaborate with parents and students to support individualized learning plans?

A Homeschool Assistant works closely with both parents and students to implement and adapt individualized learning plans. They often coordinate with parents to understand educational goals and student needs, then tailor lesson delivery, materials, and support accordingly. Regular communication and feedback are key, as the assistant may help track progress, address learning challenges, and adjust methods to suit each student’s style. This collaborative environment allows for a flexible, student-centered approach, and fosters a supportive team dynamic.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a homeschool assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Homeschool Assistant, you need a solid understanding of educational principles, subject matter proficiency, and often a background in teaching or child development. Familiarity with learning management systems, online curriculum platforms, and educational resources is typically required. Patience, strong organizational skills, and effective communication help in building rapport with students and supporting individualized learning. These skills ensure that students receive personalized, structured, and engaging education in a home-based environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage household schedules, logistics, and transportation for children's activities and appointments.

Job description

Homeschool Teacher/Family Assistant — 3 Kids (3rd, 5th, 8th Grade)

Role Overview

The Homeschool Teacher/Family Assistant is a full-time, long-term role supporting the homeschool education, activities, and daily rhythm of our three children, currently in 3rd, 5th, and 8th grade. This role involves planning and delivering daily instruction tailored to each child's grade level and learning style, coordinating with outside tutors and specialists, and keeping the kids purposefully engaged through enrichment activities. The right person also helps manage the broader logistics of a busy household — schedules, activity coordination, and day-to-day family support.

We're a busy, active family seeking someone who genuinely enjoys working closely with kids but also excels at organization, coordination, and keeping a busy household moving.

The Person We're Looking For

The right person is:

  • Dependable and exceptionally trustworthy
  • Organized, proactive, and able to think several steps ahead
  • Creative, energetic, and genuinely engaged with kids
  • Warm and fun while also being a confident authority figure
  • Comfortable differentiating instruction across multiple grade levels and learning styles
  • Comfortable keeping up with an active family
  • Collaborative and comfortable working alongside involved parents
  • Someone who sees what needs to happen and helps make it happen

Our Family & Faith

We are a practicing Christian family, and our faith is a normal and important part of daily family life.

Our Teacher/Family Assistant is not required to share our personal religious beliefs but must be genuinely comfortable working in a Christian home and supporting our children in these routines and the environment we've established for our family.

We also believe that parents should lead conversations with our children regarding personal beliefs, political issues, and controversial social or cultural topics. We expect our Teacher/Family Assistant to respect our role as parents and maintain appropriate professional boundaries around these subjects.

Responsibilities

Homeschool & Education

  • Lead or support homeschool curriculum and daily instruction across multiple grade levels
  • Coordinate with outside support such as tutors, music instructors, and other specialists as needed
  • Track academic progress and keep learning on schedule across all three kids

Activities & Enrichment

  • Coordinate and transport kids to outside activities (art, music, and other pursuits)
  • Plan enriching, age-appropriate activities to keep them engaged outside of academics
  • Keep kids purposefully occupied and moving through the day

Family & Household Logistics

  • Help manage schedules and logistics for a busy household
  • Coordinate calendars across kids' academics, activities, and appointments
  • Occasional light family errands during natural downtime

Schedule

Full-time, generally Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00/6:00 PM, with flexibility needed. Occasional weekend or overnight coverage may be requested.

Travel

Our family travels periodically for vacations and trips. Candidates must genuinely enjoy travel and be comfortable with domestic and international trips.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Education, Child Development, or related field preferred
  • Experience teaching or homeschooling multiple age groups (elementary through middle school)
  • Knowledge of or experience with neurodivergence a plus (e.g., Orton-Gillingham training or similar)
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills
  • Clear, professional communication skills for collaborating with parents
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries in a home-based environment
  • Excellent professional references
  • Valid driver's license and safe driving history
  • Valid passport for international travel, if needed
  • CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Comfortable working in and supporting the routines of a Christian family
  • Willing to complete a comprehensive background and driving-record check

Compensation

Commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Long-Term Opportunity

We value longevity and are looking for someone who wants to become a trusted, lasting part of our family's life — not just their next job.
