What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Home Staging Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Home Staging Assistant, you need a keen eye for interior design, attention to detail, and a basic understanding of real estate and home décor principles, with some employers preferring a background in design or related fields. Familiarity with design software, inventory management systems, and basic photography tools is often important. Strong communication, organization, and the ability to work efficiently in fast-paced environments help you stand out. These skills ensure that properties are presented attractively and efficiently, maximizing their appeal and supporting successful sales.

What Does a Home Staging Assistant Do?

A home staging assistant helps prepare a house for real estate showings. Your duties include improving the interior design of homes. Many staging assistants work with vacant or model homes, but you can also assist home sellers who are still living in their home as they try to sell it. You increase a home’s attractiveness by changing furniture placement, adding lighting, or helping to declutter the living space. Your responsibilities can include working on commercial buildings or model rental units as well. In existing homes, you can help load boxes and store furniture to achieve the desired decluttered appearance.

What are Home Staging Assistants?

Home Staging Assistants are professionals who help prepare residential properties for sale by arranging furniture, decor, and accessories to make homes look appealing to potential buyers. They work under the direction of a home stager or staging company, assisting with tasks such as decluttering, cleaning, and setting up decorative elements. Their goal is to create a welcoming and attractive environment that highlights the best features of a property, helping it sell more quickly and often at a higher price.

What are some common challenges faced by Home Staging Assistants and how can they be managed?

Home Staging Assistants often work in fast-paced environments where priorities can shift quickly based on client needs and property deadlines. A common challenge is coordinating multiple tasks—such as moving furniture, arranging décor, and ensuring properties are spotless—within tight timeframes. Effective communication with the lead stager and adaptability are key to managing these demands. Building good organizational habits and maintaining a positive attitude when facing last-minute changes or unexpected client requests will help you succeed in this role.

While both roles involve interior work, a Home Staging Assistant focuses on preparing homes for sale by enhancing their appeal, often working with real estate professionals. A Home Decor Assistant primarily helps with decorating and styling interiors for aesthetic purposes, usually within retail or private projects. The roles share similar skills but differ in purpose and work environment.

Job description

Location: NYC-based, with travel to our Hudson Valley headquarters 1–2 times per month (required)
Type: Part-Time

We're looking for a staging stylist who lives and breathes social media content
This is a rare hybrid role for someone with a real eye for design and an instinct for social media. You'll be on-site at staging installs and luxury properties styling spaces, and capturing, creating, and publishing the content that brings our brand to life across Instagram and beyond. You'll also help bring our podcast to life, working alongside our videographer.

If you're the person whose camera roll is already full of beautifully composed interiors, who notices the light in a room, and who knows what makes a Reel actually land ... keep reading.

Cathy Hobbs Design Recipes (CHDR) is an award-winning home staging firm led by 5-time Emmy Award–winning television host, author, and HGTV Design Star finalist Cathy Hobbs. We're consistently ranked among the Top 10 staging companies in the U.S. and Top 5 in Manhattan, working with top real estate agents and luxury properties throughout the Tri-State Area. Our headquarters, Highland Passive House, is the first multi-use Passive House Certified warehouse in North America and a gorgeous backdrop for in-house content.

What you'll do:
Styling & On-Site Content (the heart of the role):
  • Style and refine spaces on-site at staging installs, luxury homes, and short-term rentals.
  • Capture content as it happens capturing installs, behind-the-scenes, lifestyle, before-and-afters.
  • Develop a steady stream of on-brand visuals with a strong design point of view.
Social Media (ongoing ownership):
  • Plan weekly content across platforms, primarily Instagram.
  • Edit short-form video (stories, reels, clips, promos) that feels elevated, not generic.
  • Write captions in our brand voice and schedule/post consistently.
  • Translate trends into content that still looks high-end and intentional.
Podcast Support (monthly):
  • Assist our videographer with monthly batched recordings, setup, capture, and content flow.
  • Cut social teasers, trailers, and clips from each episode.
  • Help keep episodes organized and on schedule.

Who you are:
  • You have a genuine eye for design, styling, or interiors and you create content that shows it.
  • You're comfortable shooting and editing short-form video, and confident learning new tools (we use Descript, CapCut, Canva, Edits, InStories, and Wave.io familiarity is a huge plus, willingness is a must).
  • You understand social trends but know how to keep things elevated and on-brand.
  • You're organized, proactive, and happy wearing multiple hats.
  • You can work independently and collaborate with a creative team.
  • You're NYC-area based and can travel to The Hudson Valley 1–2 times per month.

Bonus points for: a background in design, styling, real estate, or hospitality; experience shooting interiors or lifestyle content; any podcast or audio-editing exposure.

How to apply
A cover letter with links to your work is required — it's how we get a feel for your eye and your voice, and applications without one won't be reviewed. Show us content you're proud of: a feed you've built, Reels and content you've made, spaces you've styled.
