To scale our current impact, ASU Prep is advancing a major expansion program taking fundamental responsibility for the communities we serve.
The Math Subject Matter Expert (SME) serves as the network-wide authority on mathematics education across ASU Prep's K-8 system. This role leads the design, alignment, and continuous improvement of math curriculum, assessment, and instructional practice to ensure high levels of student achievement across all campuses. Success is measured by increased student mastery, stronger instructional precision among teachers, and consistent implementation of evidence-based practices.
The ideal candidate brings deep intellectual curiosity about how students learn mathematics, a strong commitment to equity in outcomes, and exceptional interpersonal skills to build trust and credibility with teachers, leaders, and stakeholders. This role requires a collaborative mindset grounded in PLC values - shared ownership, evidence-based decision-making, and collective responsibility for results. The Math SME reports to the Executive Director of Academics and partners closely with principals, instructional coaches, and PLC teams to translate research into daily classroom practice.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Education with a concentration or emphasis in Mathematics or Mathematics Education, required.
    • Master's degree in above fields or closely related fields, preferred.
  • Valid Arizona teaching certificate that fulfills one of the following:
    • Standard Professional Elementary K-8, required or
    • Standard Professional Elementary K-8, with Middle Grades Mathematics approved area, preferred, or
    • Standard Professional Secondary, 6-12 with Mathematics as approved area, required.
  • Minimum 5 years of classroom mathematics teaching experience across elementary, middle, or high school levels, required.
    • Minimum 2 years of experience in an instructional coaching, curriculum design, or math leadership role, preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating professional development for adult learners and leading data-driven instructional improvement cycles.
  • Experience with Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and tiered mathematics intervention design.
  • Familiarity with Hattie's Visible Learning research and the Instructional Hierarchy diagnostic framework.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation with the ability to travel between ASU Prep campuses, required.
  • Active AZ Department of Public Safety (DPS) IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead the development, alignment, and continuous refinement of K-8 mathematics curriculum across all ASU Prep campuses, ensuring vertical coherence and adherence to Arizona Mathematics Standards.
  • Design and facilitate high-quality professional development for mathematics teachers and instructional leaders, grounded in the Hattie-Donoghue model of learning, the Dynamic Dozen strategies, and the Science of Learning practices (interleaving, retrieval practice, spacing).
  • Partner with PLC teams to unpack mathematics standards into Surface, Deep, and Transfer learning targets and co-design common formative assessments that reveal student learning phases and Instructional Hierarchy stages.
  • Analyze network-wide mathematics achievement data to identify trends, diagnose root causes using the Instructional Hierarchy diagnostic framework, and recommend targeted instructional responses at Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3.
  • Model and co-teach research-based mathematics instructional practices in classrooms, including High Leverage Practices (Check for Understanding, Direct Instruction, Gradual Release of Responsibility) that support how students learn-building understanding of content, providing structured practice to process and persist through challenges, and using ongoing checks for understanding to adjust instruction based on student data. Continuously seeks out and maintains on-going knowledge of additional research-based mathematics strategies, such as the thinking classroom and collaborative learning practices.
  • Support site leaders in conducting framework-aligned classroom walkthroughs with mathematics-specific look-fors and provide calibrated feedback that connects observation data to PLC team practice.
  • Develop and maintain a library of mathematics-specific instructional resources, intervention protocols, and assessment tools aligned to the Teaching and Learning Framework.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director of Academics to set network-wide mathematics achievement goals, monitor progress toward those goals, and report outcomes to district leadership.
  • Serve as the network's mathematics content expert during curriculum adoption processes, vendor evaluations, and state or national standards review cycles.
  • Stay current on mathematics education research, attend professional conferences, and bring emerging evidence-based practices into the ASU Prep instructional ecosystem.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

  • Deep expertise in K-8 mathematics content, pedagogy, and standards alignment
  • Strong command of evidence-based math instruction and student learning research
  • Working knowledge of key instructional frameworks (PLC, MTSS/RTI, Instructional Hierarchy, Hattie-Donoghue)
  • Understanding of assessment design and math-focused instructional technology
  • Designs and leads high-impact professional learning tied to classroom outcomes
  • Analyzes student data to identify gaps and drive targeted instructional action
  • Coaches educators through observation, feedback, and collaborative planning
  • Communicates effectively across audiences; produces high-quality instructional resources
  • Builds trust and credibility across campuses and leadership levels
  • Manages complex, cross-functional initiatives with strong attention to detail
  • Adapts quickly and collaborates in dynamic, evolving environments
  • Operates independently with strong prioritization and a results-driven mindset
