Job description

Job Summary:
The Grade Checker plays a critical role in ensuring grading operations meet project specifications and design elevations. This position involves working closely with equipment operators, surveyors, and project managers to maintain grade accuracy for excavation, grading, and paving operations.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Verify and maintain grade specifications on construction sites using stakes, lasers, and other survey tools.
  • Interpret civil drawings, blueprints, and grade plans to provide clear guidance to equipment operators.
  • Monitor earthwork and paving operations to ensure adherence to design grades and slopes.
  • Set and check grade stakes for excavation, embankment, subgrade, base course, and asphalt paving.
  • Communicate with site supervisors, survey crews, and machine operators to ensure smooth field operations.
  • Adjust grades on-the-fly based on field conditions and project requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and participate in daily safety briefings.
  • Record and report discrepancies or issues with grade to supervisors and suggest corrective actions.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, walk, stand; Able to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 lbs. and lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or coursework in surveying or civil construction is a plus.
  • Experience in grading or heavy civil construction.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting civil plans, drawings, and cut sheets.
  • Familiarity with laser levels, GPS, total stations, and other grade-checking tools.
  • Strong understanding of construction math and elevations.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
