Home Based Accountant information

What is a home based accountant?

A home based accountant is a professional who manages financial records, prepares tax returns, and offers accounting services while working remotely from their home. They may work for a company, an accounting firm, or operate as independent contractors serving multiple clients. Home based accountants use digital tools to communicate with clients, process financial data, and ensure compliance with financial regulations. This flexible arrangement allows them to balance work and personal life, reduce commuting time, and often serve clients from various locations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a home based accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Home Based Accountant, you need strong accounting knowledge, attention to detail, and a relevant degree or certification such as CPA or ACCA. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, Xero, or Sage, and secure file-sharing systems is typically required. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and clear communication skills help remote accountants stand out. These abilities ensure accurate financial management, client trust, and efficient delivery of services in a remote work environment.

How do home based accountants typically manage communication and collaboration with clients and team members?

Home based accountants often rely on digital tools such as email, video conferencing, cloud-based accounting software, and project management platforms to stay connected with clients and colleagues. Effective communication is essential for clarifying financial information, addressing client inquiries, and coordinating with other professionals like tax advisors or auditors. Establishing regular check-ins and clear response times helps maintain professionalism and trust, even when working remotely. Adapting to these virtual collaboration methods is a key aspect of succeeding as a home based accountant.

How much does a home based accountant make?

A home-based accountant's salary typically ranges from $45,000 to $75,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and client base. Many work freelance or independently, setting their own rates and schedules, often using accounting software like QuickBooks or Excel.

We’re constantly striving to diversify our teams to ensure we have the best and brightest talent. We’re deeply committed to creating an inclusive and equitable workplace where each person can contribute.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The accounting job family is responsible for safeguarding the integrity of Cavco’s financial records by ensuring transactions are recorded accurately, completely and timely in accordance with GAAP, SEC reporting requirements, internal controls and company policies. The team maintains the general ledger, chart of accounts, subsidiary ledgers, vendor records, and related accounting processes, while partnering with financial reporting, internal stakeholders and internal and external auditors to support accurate reporting, compliance and informed business decision-making.

The Senior Staff Accountant plays a key role in supporting the accuracy, integrity and timeliness of Cavco’s financial reporting. This position owns complex accounting activities, prepares and analyzes journal entries and reconciliations and supports reserve calculations and technical accounting matters. This position also partners with internal stakeholders to improve processes, strengthen controls and provide meaningful financial insights. The role requires sound judgment, strong analytical capability and the ability to independently manage priorities in a deadline-driven environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare, analyze and post complex journal entries, ensuring transactions are properly supported, classified and compliant with GAAP and company policy.
  • Prepare and review complex account reconciliations, proactively identifying reconciling items, trends, risks and process improvement opportunities.
  • Support reserve calculations, accruals, estimates and other judgment-based accounting areas through well-documented analysis.
  • Develop clear, well-supported analyses and explanations of financial activity, variances and unusual transactions for management review.
  • Prepare balance sheet and income statement fluctuation analyses, identifying key drivers, unusual trends and items requiring management attention.
  • Assist with accounting policy documentation and technical accounting research for assigned areas, including documenting conclusions and supporting management review.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, established accounting policies, close calendars and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead efforts to streamline, standardize and automate banking, reconciliations and other accounting processes.
  • Manage fixed asset accounting activities, including additions, disposals, depreciation, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
  • Prepare audit support and interact with internal and external auditors on assigned accounting areas.
  • Develop and monitor relevant financial and operational KPIs to assess business performance and communicate trends to management.
  • Support the development of accounting staff by sharing knowledge, providing training support, reviewing work when appropriate and promoting consistency, accuracy and professional growth across the team.
  • Participate in and lead special projects, including system implementations, reporting enhancements, process improvements and control initiatives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • 4+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably with a combination of corporate and public accounting.
  • CPA preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, account reconciliation standards and financial reporting processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently research issues, analyze complex transactions, and recommend appropriate accounting treatment.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and advanced Excel, including the ability to analyze, organize, and present complex financial data.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial results, risks, and recommendations to accounting leadership and business partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, organization, problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Advanced understanding of financial statements, accounting support schedules and technical accounting documentation.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record necessary for occasional required travel.
