Job description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of a licensed registered nurse, the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) I assists in direct patient care by providing for activities of daily living (ADL), comfort, nutrition, and hygiene needs for the adult and geriatric patient. Takes and records clinical measures, collects specimens, provides transportation, and maintains equipment and supplies. Immediately informs RN of any changes in patient condition and reinforces patient teaching as part of providing a safe patient centered care environment. May assist with patient charts as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

The Patient Care Assistant/Clerical Coordinator (PCA/CC) role does all of the above and also is responsible for some clerical coordinator responsibilities which includes processing and monitoring electronic orders for STAT, asap orders, verified orders and provides follow-up as needed. Maintains and updates pertinent patient information in computer systems. Answers all phone calls and greets visitors. Completes census sheet each night at Midnight. Manages call lights. Is an EPIC resource to the department.

Education and Experience

  • Employees hired after 12/31/2011: High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Recent employment as a Nursing Assistant preferred.
  • Experience in computerized charting preferred

License Required

  • Either:
    • Current certification as a Nursing Assistant/CNA from the State of California, or
    • Current Licensed Vocational Nurse license, or
    • Current RN license, or
    • Completion of first semester and ongoing enrollment in nursing program

Note that if using CNA Certification, must meet all requirements for certification renewal including obtaining 48 hours of CEUs every two years and obtaining a minimum of 12 of those CEUs in each year of the certification period.
