What You'll Do

Deliver Compassionate Triage & Student Care

  • Assess, prioritize, and address student health concerns through in-person and telephone encounters.
  • Utilize clinical judgment to determine patient needs and appropriate levels of care.
  • Coordinate appointments based on acuity and healthcare needs.
  • Document assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately within the electronic medical record.
  • Provide health education and empower students to make informed healthcare decisions.
  • Connect students with campus and community resources, including wellness and specialty services.
  • Collaborate with clinicians and interdisciplinary healthcare team members to ensure exceptional patient outcomes.

Support International Travel Health Programs

  • Provide nursing care and consultation services for students, faculty, and university-sponsored travel groups.
  • Assess travel itineraries to determine vaccination and preventive healthcare needs.
  • Recommend and administer travel-related vaccines according to established protocols.
  • Educate travelers regarding destination-specific health risks and preventive measures, including:
    • Malaria prevention
    • Traveler's diarrhea prevention and treatment
    • Altitude sickness awareness
    • HIV post-exposure prophylaxis
    • Travel safety best practices
  • Document care and consultations within the electronic medical record.

Promote Campus Health Through Immunization Compliance

  • Partner with Student Health colleagues to review and process incoming student immunization records and tuberculosis screening documentation.
  • Communicate compliance requirements and next steps to students.
  • Administer vaccines according to standing orders and clinical protocols.
  • Monitor and document vaccine administration and adverse reactions.
  • Support university public health initiatives and regulatory compliance efforts.

Provide Allergy Desensitization Services

  • Deliver allergy immunotherapy care in partnership with students' home allergists.
  • Review and interpret treatment orders and protocols.
  • Coordinate communication with external providers when clarification or treatment modifications are needed.
  • Administer allergy injections and adjust dosing according to physician instructions and patient responses.
  • Monitor patients for reactions and ensure safe treatment delivery.

Support Clinical Excellence & Team Development

  • Assist with onboarding and mentoring nursing staff.
  • Promote effective utilization of clinical resources and equipment.
  • Support infection prevention and patient safety practices.
  • Participate in competency development, continuing education, and departmental training initiatives.
  • Contribute to a culture of teamwork, continuous improvement, and service excellence.

Contribute Beyond the Role

  • Participate in projects, initiatives, and departmental activities that advance the mission of Duke Student Health and Duke University.
  • Support evolving organizational priorities and student health needs.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Graduation from an accredited:
    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program,
    • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program, or
    • Nursing Diploma program.
  • Current North Carolina Registered Nurse licensure.
  • Nurses without a BSN (or higher nursing degree) must enroll in an approved BSN program within two years of hire and complete the degree within five years of hire.

Experience

  • Minimum of one year of professional nursing experience.
  • Experience in college health, student health, ambulatory care, or outpatient settings preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active North Carolina RN License
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Experience utilizing Epic Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
  • Strong assessment and clinical decision-making skills

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $29.34 to USD $43.01. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
