What is a historic restoration?

A Historic Restoration job involves preserving, repairing, and restoring historic buildings or structures to their original or a specific period-accurate condition. Professionals in this field work with architects, historians, and craftspeople to maintain historical integrity while incorporating modern safety and accessibility standards. This may include masonry repair, woodwork restoration, and structural stabilization. The goal is to extend the life of historic properties while maintaining their cultural and architectural significance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in historic restoration, and why are they important?

To excel in Historic Restoration, you need knowledge of architectural history, hands-on skills in restoration techniques, and often a relevant degree or certification in historic preservation or construction. Familiarity with specialized tools, conservation materials, and regulatory compliance systems like the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards is important. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are valued soft skills in this field. These competencies help ensure historically accurate and structurally sound restoration while maintaining collaborative relationships with stakeholders and preservation authorities.

What are some common challenges faced in historic restoration work?

One of the main challenges in historic restoration is balancing the need to preserve original materials and features with meeting modern building codes and safety standards. Professionals in this field often work with aging structures where unexpected issues, such as hidden damage or obsolete construction methods, can arise and require creative problem-solving. Collaboration with architects, historians, and regulatory bodies is crucial, as every project must adhere to strict preservation guidelines while staying on schedule and budget. As a result, flexibility, patience, and a passion for heritage conservation are highly beneficial for overcoming these challenges and achieving successful restoration outcomes.

How to start a career in historic restoration?

To start a career in historic restoration, gaining relevant skills through apprenticeships, vocational training, or courses in conservation, architecture, or carpentry is essential. Building hands-on experience with restoration projects and obtaining certifications such as those from the National Trust for Historic Preservation can improve job prospects. Familiarity with tools, materials, and preservation techniques is also important for success in this field.

How to work in historic restoration?

To work in historic restoration, gain relevant skills through training in construction, carpentry, or preservation techniques, and obtain certifications such as OSHA or specialized preservation credentials. Experience with tools, attention to detail, and knowledge of historical materials are essential, and working under experienced restorers can provide practical learning opportunities.

Job description

Historic CarpenterAbout Durable Restoration

Durable Restoration specializes in the preservation and restoration of historic buildings and landmarks. We work on churches, government buildings, universities, museums, and some private residences—helping our clients preserve the character and craftsmanship of their buildings for generations to come.

We take pride in high-quality craftsmanship, excellent service, and doing the job right.

About the Role

We are looking for a Historic Carpenter to join our restoration team. You’ll work alongside our foremen and other skilled craftsmen to repair, restore, and preserve historic woodwork and architectural elements.

We’re looking for someone with 2+ years of carpentry experience, ideally with some experience in historic restoration. However, we recognize that historic carpentry is a specialized trade, and we provide paid training to help you develop the skills needed for the work.

What You’ll Bring
  • 2+ years of carpentry experience; historic restoration experience preferred
  • Experience with general framing and finish carpentry
  • Ability to read drawings and work from existing conditions
  • Ability to accurately measure, cut, fit, and install wood materials
  • Basic understanding of structural wood repair
  • Attention to detail and respect for historic materials
  • Ability to safely remove, repair, and reinstall historic woodwork, windows, and doors
  • Willingness to learn specialized restoration techniques, including wood repair, window restoration, glazing, and coatings
  • Ability to work independently while communicating effectively with the project foreman
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license preferred, but not required
  • Ability to work at heights and outdoors in different seasons
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and stand for long periods of time
  • Willingness to travel as needed

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who takes pride in their craftsmanship, pays attention to detail, and wants to develop their skills in historic restoration.

What We Offer
  • Paid in-house and on-the-job training

  • Competitive pay

  • Uncapped overtime

  • Year-round work

  • Paid travel time for work outside of our normal branches service area

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance

  • 401(k)

  • Quarterly bonuses for days worked out of town and Saturdays worked

  • Perfect attendance bonuses

  • Opportunities for advancement based on performance, not tenure

Additional Requirements

Employment is contingent upon successfully completing a background check and pre-employment drug screening. Random drug screening may be required during employment.

If you're an experienced carpenter who enjoys working with your hands, cares about quality, and wants to learn the specialized craft of historic restoration, we'd like to hear from you.
