Certification from organizations like the National Park Service or preservation societies can enhance job prospects, and hands-on experience with restoration projects is highly valuable.

What are some common challenges faced in historic restoration work?

One of the main challenges in historic restoration is balancing the need to preserve original materials and features with meeting modern building codes and safety standards. Professionals in this field often work with aging structures where unexpected issues, such as hidden damage or obsolete construction methods, can arise and require creative problem-solving. Collaboration with architects, historians, and regulatory bodies is crucial, as every project must adhere to strict preservation guidelines while staying on schedule and budget. As a result, flexibility, patience, and a passion for heritage conservation are highly beneficial for overcoming these challenges and achieving successful restoration outcomes.

What is the 50 year rule in historic preservation?

The 50 year rule in historic preservation refers to the guideline that a property is considered historically significant if it is at least 50 years old. This criterion helps determine eligibility for listing on historic registers and influences restoration practices, requiring preservationists to assess age, integrity, and historical importance during restoration projects.

What is the highest paying history job?

In the field of historic restoration, senior project managers and preservation directors tend to have the highest salaries, often earning six-figure incomes. These roles require extensive experience, leadership skills, and knowledge of conservation techniques and building codes.

What is a Historic Restoration job?

A Historic Restoration job involves preserving, repairing, and restoring historic buildings or structures to their original or a specific period-accurate condition. Professionals in this field work with architects, historians, and craftspeople to maintain historical integrity while incorporating modern safety and accessibility standards. This may include masonry repair, woodwork restoration, and structural stabilization. The goal is to extend the life of historic properties while maintaining their cultural and architectural significance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Historic Restoration position, and why are they important?

To excel in Historic Restoration, you need knowledge of architectural history, hands-on skills in restoration techniques, and often a relevant degree or certification in historic preservation or construction. Familiarity with specialized tools, conservation materials, and regulatory compliance systems like the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards is important. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are valued soft skills in this field. These competencies help ensure historically accurate and structurally sound restoration while maintaining collaborative relationships with stakeholders and preservation authorities.

What degree do you need to be a historic preservationist?

A historic preservationist typically needs at least a bachelor's degree in fields such as history, architecture, archaeology, or historic preservation. Advanced positions may require a master's degree or specialized certifications, along with skills in research, documentation, and conservation techniques.

Lead Restoration Work That Stands the Test of Time.

Altitude Services LLC is a Dallas-based construction company specializing in historical restoration, masonry, concrete, paint and coatings, plaster work, and commercial construction. We restore and preserve meaningful buildings with a focus on quality craftsmanship, professionalism, safety, and respect for the history behind every project.

We are hiring an experienced Historic Restoration Painter to support finished and decorative painting work on historic, courthouse, institutional, and commercial restoration projects throughout Texas. This role is focused on skilled finish and decorative painting for historic restoration work, not high-volume production painting. The ideal candidate brings patience, precision, strong surface preparation skills, and the ability to match specified products and colors to existing historic finishes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform finished and decorative painting on historic restoration, courthouse, institutional, and commercial projects
  • Prepare historic substrates carefully, including sanding, scraping, patching, priming, cleaning, and related surface preparation
  • Apply paints, coatings, primers, stains, and specialty finishes according to project specifications
  • Match specified products and colors to existing finishes and approved samples
  • Support restoration work involving historic surfaces, trim, doors, windows, walls, plaster, metal, masonry, and related materials
  • Follow detailed scopes of work, product requirements, color schedules, and finish specifications
  • Maintain high-quality workmanship on visible, detailed, and specialty finish areas
  • Protect surrounding materials, historic features, floors, fixtures, and active work areas during painting operations
  • Coordinate with supervisors, project managers, other trades, and restoration team members
  • Maintain a clean, safe, organized, and professional jobsite
  • Document work as required and follow project procedures for restoration, institutional, and prevailing wage projects
  • Travel to project sites throughout Austin, Central Texas, and statewide as needed
  • Uphold company values of craftsmanship, integrity, respect, and preservation

Qualifications

  • Experience with finished painting, decorative painting, coatings, restoration, commercial painting, or specialty finish work
  • Surface preparation experience on historic, older, or sensitive substrates preferred
  • Ability to match colors, products, finishes, and existing conditions according to specifications
  • Experience working on historic restoration, courthouse, institutional, commercial, or renovation projects preferred
  • Strong understanding of proper prep, priming, finish application, coating systems, and jobsite workflow
  • Ability to follow detailed specifications, product requirements, and supervisor direction
  • Comfortable working on projects with longer timelines, detailed documentation, and strict quality standards
  • Reliable, safety-minded, detail-oriented, and team-oriented
  • Willing and able to travel to project sites throughout Texas
  • Historic preservation experience is a plus, but not required
  • Experience on prevailing wage or government/public projects is a plus
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation are required

Pay and Benefits

  • Full-time, permanent position
  • W-2 employment
  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • Prevailing wage opportunities may apply by project
  • Travel-related support provided for qualifying project work
  • Paid holidays, six per year
  • Steady work on unique historic restoration, courthouse, institutional, and commercial construction projects
  • Opportunity to grow with a specialized restoration company
