Job description

Histopathology Technologist

Location: Miami, FL – Near Zoo Miami (MetroZoo Area)
REPORTS TO: Lab Manager
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

JOB SUMMARY:

Histopathology Technologists play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of disease by turning tissue samples into microscope slides. Assumes accountability for a group of patients tests for designated time frame and provides a single standard of quality to these tests via independent judgment standard operating procedures instrumentation and positive interaction with other health care team members.

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:

  • Must be a Registered Histology Technician (ASCP) or be eligible for such registration or have a high school education and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a Histology Technician or have a minimum of one year’s training under the direction of a registered Histology Technologist.
  • Spatial ability is required to perceive three-dimensional and geometric relationships when cutting paraffin blocks and embedding molds.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate the micro-thin tissue sections and to mount onto microscope slides
  • Color discrimination required to verify diagnostic quality of staining processes in order that essential features of tissue sections can be properly defined
  • Associate degree in related field is required

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:

  • ASCP preferred

ABILITIES/SKILLS:

The Histology Technician will perform the various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist. This may include logging, batching, and cutting, mounting and staining procedures. Tissue specimens received from surgical, diagnostic, or autopsy cases are sorted, logged, and prioritized according to the standards required. Upon receiving written or verbal orders from physicians or their designees, the Histology Technician will coordinate daily workflow of tasks and activities in the surgical pathology area with regard to routine procedures, special procedures, and the surgery schedule.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

Produces accurate results and outcomes according to age-specific standard operating procedures. Matches the patient identifying information on specimens with the work document without clerical/data entry errors or omissions. Demonstrates the ability to coordinate simultaneous series of procedures with accuracy. Consults supervisor for additional assignments and follows them to completion. Completes patient and quality control procedures within defined time limits. Interprets patient quality control samples or procedures, determining whether they are abnormal or incorrect. Takes appropriate action according to protocol. Notifies supervisor when necessary. Completes routing tasks without direct supervision. Oversees and/or performs preventive maintenance and documents corrective actions taken. Prioritizes workload in response to STAT requests according to protocol. Learn new procedures and assignments within a mutually agreed-upon time frame. Offers innovative solutions to allow for effective and effective delivery of laboratory services. Maintains neat, legible, and organized written work documents with appropriate dates/initials. Adapts to modifications of work assignments and, when requested, is willing to adjust personal schedule for the rotating shifts Monday-Friday between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd depending on benefit of patient care needs.
